Richard II Review – Cardiff’s Open Air Theatre Festival
Our little run of trips to Cardiff’s Open Air Theatre Festival came to an end last week with Richard II which was performed by Everyman Youth Theatre. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the shows, and this one was no different.
Performed by Everyman Youth Theatre, I was excited to see the young talent and the quality of the acting was great. I recognized some of the cast from the Peter Pan show we had seen the day before so they were clearly working hard!
I’d never seen or read Richard II before so I didn’t have anything to compare it to but I thought it was really very well done. The story was effectively conveyed, which is important to the audience, and especially to me who hadn’t seen it before. Whilst I have studied Shakespeare and therefore am familiar with the sort of dialogue to be expected, others might not be, and I thought that the gist of the story was easy to pick up.
The performance was energetic and emotional. You got a really good sense for characters and they were passionately portrayed. There were a couple of slip ups with remembering lines, but nothing that took away from the show at all.
I’ll really miss heading out on these little date nights with my hubby. We’ve really enjoyed all the performances we have seen and have seen some really wonderful shows, and shows that we might not have considered before but loved them all. I’ve also bumped into lots of friends there and it is lovely to see so many people appreciating great theatre.
Until next year Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival Everyman, it’s been a blast!
