I have been doing a LOT of work to the house lately. We have had some major insulation work done and done a lot of decorating just to update the house a little since we moved in 7 years ago. I am quite happy with it but having recently been to some of my friend’s houses for the first time I was taken aback by just how TIDY their houses are.
We live in an old Victorian house. It lends itself to a more cluttered look I feel. It feels homely, cosy and lived in to me, but now I am thinking do I just have too much stuff? Should I try to be more minimalist? Am I actually living in a big mess?
My friends houses are smart, show home types. You know the ones – feature wallpaper and no pictures adorning the fireplace, just a scented candle and shabby chic ornament. There are a couple of fancy ‘Venture’ type huge canvases on the walls and the kitchen counters are completely clear.
Part of me loves this look, and another part of me wonders where all the toys are? Where are the photos of the children? Their artwork? Where are their cookbooks? Do they really get the toaster out of a cupboard every morning?! Where the hell are their shoes and coats?!
I know that people live in all different ways and have different tastes. I should embrace the fact that my style just does not mix well with the minimalist look. Ultimately as much as I like the minimalist look, we simply are not minimalist people. I want pictures of my children up everywhere, and I want to see their artwork. I want them to be able to get out their toys easily and I don’t want to live in a museum.
I’d be really interested to hear what your house style is? Do you live in a showhome and love it or do you have a more unique home? I’d love to hear about it.
