Halloween, a time of spooky fun, creativity, and decorating with all things eerie and fun. As we dive headfirst into the season of pumpkin carving, costume planning, and haunted house visits, it's crucial to set the right atmosphere with some halloween banners. And what better way to do that than with some DIY Halloween bunting flags? In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the steps to create your own unique and festive Halloween bunting. Who doesn't love a bit of bunting, right?
What you will need
Before we begin crafting this delightful piece of Halloween dΓ©cor, make sure you've gathered all the necessary supplies. You'll need:
- 1. Cardboard
- 2. Fat quarters of fabric (in various Halloween-themed colors)
- 3. Scissors
- 4. Pencil
- 5. Cardstock
- 6. Sewing machine or needle and thread
- 7. Fusing web
- 8. Double-fold bias binding
- 9. Pins
- 10. Iron
Step 1: Creating a Bunting Template
The first step in making your Halloween bunting is to create a cardboard bunting triangle template. To do this, measure out the dimensions you'd like your triangles to be. Typically, a good size is around 15 cm tall by 10 cm wide. Once you've established your desired size, cut out your cardboard triangle. This will serve as the base for all your bunting pieces. You can keep this template to make all sort of festive buntings like birthday bunting or Christmas bunting. Good news - I have included a digital download of a bunting triangle template below if you should need one.
Step 2: Making AppliquΓ© Templates
Now, it's time to add the word "Halloween" to your bunting. To do this, print out the word "Halloween" in a large, bold font onto cardstock. This will be your template for the appliquΓ© letters. Carefully cut out each letter, making sure to leave a border around them. These letters will add a fun and festive touch to your bunting. Again, I have included a digital file which includes the letters if you want to print them onto cardboard at home. Please bear in mind that these downloads are for personal use only.
Step 3: Choosing Your Fabric
With your cardboard template and appliquΓ© letters ready, it's time to select the fabrics you'll use for your bunting. Choose a variety of Halloween-themed colors and patterns. This could be black text on a white background, orange on black, or vice versa, green and black or use halloween print fabric. Fat quarters of fabric are ideal for this project, as they provide a good amount of material to work with. Fold your fat quarters so that they are approximately the same height as your cardboard template. This will make it easier to cut out the triangle shapes.
Step 4: Cutting Your Bunting Triangles
Lay your cardboard template onto the folded fabric and use it as a guide to cut out your bunting triangles. You'll want to cut triangles from all your fabric pieces, with the exception of one piece of black and one of orange (or whichever colours you choose). These two pieces will be reserved for the appliquΓ© letters.
Step 5: Adding AppliquΓ© Letters
With your fabric triangles cut out, it's time to add the "Halloween" appliquΓ© letters.
Iron some fusing web that is just bigger than your letter onto the back of the fabric.
Place your cardstock letters on top and trace around them. Then, carefully cut out the fabric letters. Once you have your fabric letters iron them onto the bunting triangles and then use your sewing machine or needle and thread to attach them to your fabric triangles. You can follow a basic appliquΓ© tutorial if you're new to this technique.
Step 6: Assembling Your Bunting
Now that your fabric triangles have their spooky letters attached, it's time to assemble your bunting. To do this, take two fabric triangles and place them together, wrong sides facing each other. This creates a double-sided effect, with one side featuring the "Halloween" wording and the other side plain.
Step 7: Attaching the Triangles to Bias Binding
To create the actual bunting, you'll need to attach the fabric triangles to some double-fold bias binding. Begin by slipping the top edge of each triangle into the middle fold of the bias binding. Make sure the triangles are evenly spaced, and use pins to hold them in place.
Step 8: Sewing the Bunting
With your fabric triangles secured in the bias binding, it's time to sew them in place. Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew a long line of straight stitches that runs the length of the bias binding, securing all the triangles in place. Leave a little extra bias binding on each end to make it easier to hang your bunting.
Tip: this tutorial is for an easy halloween bunting. If you want to create something a little more professional you should sew the triangles together, right sides together, leaving the widest point at the top open. Clip and trim the edges and turn the triangles the right way round. Iron them flat and then you can sew them into your bias binding. This gives a neater look but is more time consuming.
Step 9: Hang and Enjoy Your Halloween Bunting
Once you've sewn all your triangles into the bias binding, you will have an eerily elegant bunting cloth and your Halloween bunting is ready to hang. You can hang it on the wall, drape it over a banister, or even use it as part of your Halloween party decorations - get in your decorative element! It's a simple yet effective way to add a spooky and festive touch to your home and will make the perfect addition to your Halloween collection.
