This January I made the conscious decision to eat healthier, to eat a vegan diet as much as possible and cut right down on the sugar and processed foods. It’s been going really well, but the one thing I have struggled with is eating out.
Last week I was invited to try out the new cafe Benugo in John Lewis in Cardiff. I was promised a feast of healthy food and I wasn’t disappointed. I might have mentioned before just how much I love John Lewis in the St David’s Centre before. It has parking downstairs so it is easy to drive there, park up and wander around. It’s in the middle of Cardiff too if you were getting there via public transport. It has pretty much everything I need so when I pop into Cardiff I don’t need to venture too far. It also has great facilities for babies and children which is really important to me!
Benugo is situated on the first floor of John Lewis and is a lovely bright cafe. It has high chairs and the staff are really helpful so it’s a nice place to take children.
All of this is great, but the real highlight of Benugo is the food. Their menu is a seasonal one which means it is continually evolving. January saw them focus on providing a healthy twist to traditional favourites, such as coconut milk and cacao nibs with porridge.
They have a great range of sandwiches and salads which I got to try and they were all absolutely delicious. Fresh ingredients and great flavour combinations made for a truly delicious lunch. A highlight for me was the Middle Eastern Meze Wrap – a spinach wrap with hummus, tzatziki, falafel, peppers, feta and rocket. It was a mix of flavours that worked so well, was tasty and filling and felt like a bit of a treat to eat, even though it is really healthy.
Another favourite of mine was the Genovese Pesto Pasta. Not only does this salad look simply gorgeous, it’s full of extra protein in the form of edamame beans, flavoured with green pesto, olives and slow roast tomatoes.
Of course, no lunch is complete without a coffee and their latte’s were divine. They will make them with soy milk if you are cutting down on your dairy consumption. They also have a selection of naughty and not so naughty sweet treats, if you are feeling so inclined after your meal, or you are just looking to stop for a coffee and a cake.
Tea lovers, don’t worry, you are definitely not missing out here. Benugo has a great selection of loose leaf teas from different parts of the world and are very proud of the quality of their cups of tea!
So if you are heading into Cardiff anytime soon, definitely head over to Benugo and check out their delicious food. You won’t regret it!
