Looking to brighten up your home and allow natural light in? There are a few ways to do it that don’t involve a lot of work or expense.
Mirrors
Place mirrors opposite windows and the natural light and views will be reflected around the room. If the opposing wall isn’t the right shape or length for a large mirror, try placing the mirror adjacent to create the illusion that you have another window. Or, if you’ve got the wall space, place two mirrors opposite each other to make the room feel both bigger and brighter.
If you don’t like the idea of additional mirrors in your home, head to a store in search of oversized pictures or pieces of art as they’ll also break up wide walls. Metallic, shiny frames work best as they reflect light and images with white backgrounds will also help spread natural light around your home.
Shiny accessories
Make room for new objects on the coffee table – namely shiny ones. Accessories that are made from light-reflecting materials such as brass, gold, silver and glass will help brighten up your home and may give you an opportunity to get creative. Whether you want to keep it simple and buy a few quick fixes, e.g. brass lamps, silver bowls and gold vases, or are up for a little challenge and want to customise your existing furniture, it’s easy to add a little shine to your interiors to lighten up your house.
Go large with windows and doors
For a more long-term solution, consider installing larger windows or even opting for folding doors. They’re perfect for a garden-facing room and make outdoor BBQ’s and parties easier in the summer as they slide open fully. What’s more, you can choose your own colour and finish, so they fit in with the rest of the room’s interiors while bringing a flood of natural light into the house.
Keep colours light and neutral
Make sure the ceilings in your home are the lightest part of a room. White is the best option as it reflects light whereas darker, bolder colours will absorb the light. Stick with neutral colours such as nude, beige and grey so natural light can bounce around the room and isn’t swallowed by the walls or furniture. The same can be said for the texture of accessories: stick with cotton and other light fabrics that can help contribute to the summery, natural vibes you’re trying to create.
Keep it clean
As obvious as it sounds, a little spring clean can do wonders when it comes to brightening up your home. From the items inside to the windows themselves and even the ceilings and walls, a quick clean and polish will pull natural light in immediately. This is particularly true for those who have a lot of white and black in their homes. White surfaces need regular cleaning to stay truly white and black shiny surfaces gather dust easily so need frequent attention to remain reflective.
