Relationships take work, whatever age you are at. Of course, the work is definitely worth it but if you are ready to face the challenges that come with each generation of relationship you will be more likely to have a smoother ride. When you are over 50 you might find yourself in one of many of the different stages of life so here are some tips on how to make your relationship work when you are over 50 that should cover many of them.
Put Yourself Out There
If you are over 50 and find yourself single don't think that it's too late for you. Put yourself out there and open up yourself to new relationships, romantic or otherwise. There are plenty of clubs and social groups for the over 50s or get online and look for an over 50s dating site. It's not as scary as you might think, just be safe when meeting up with strangers. Remember it's not all about finding a romantic relationship, there is great value in friendships too. You never know what you might find out there.
Keep things fresh
If you have been together a long time it is important to keep things fresh and interesting. Gone are the spontaneous days of youth but that doesn't mean that you can't have fun. Book a holiday, go on a date, take up a new hobby together. Make sure you give yourselves something new to talk about by doing something new and interesting!
Keep communicating
It's easy to foster presumptions or resentment as you get older. It's really important that you keep talking to each other and don't presume that you know what the other is thinking, even if you have been together for a while. It's also easy for the conversation to revolve around work or children or family commitments but try to make the time to talk about other things, such as a film you have seen together or a book you have been enjoying. If you find that you are struggling to communicate you can look to a counselling service such as Relate which can help you start talking effectively again.
Make an effort
If you have been together for a while you will have seen each other in all different situations, in sickness and health and while there is comfort in that familiarity it doesn't hurt to get dressed up once in a while and go for a glamorous date night. Be spontaneous and book a nice luxury hotel and get a babysitter in for the children. Making an effort doesn't have to cost a lot or be too much hard work, it could be as easy as making a special dinner for your other half on a Friday night.
Make a blended family work
If you are embarking on a new relationship post 50 you might both come with some baggage in the form of a child or two. In this current age blended families are very common but they still take some getting used to. Take it slowly and give each other the space to work things out. Don't rush into making things perfect or force anything, it will work out in time. Don't forget to look for and ask for help if you need it.
