Making time to exercise after having a baby

I used to be a real gym bunny. I would go after work and often spend a bit of the weekend there, working out then enjoying the leisure facilities.

After having kids everything changes though. Weekends are taken up with family time and I am so tired in the week that the thought of going out to the gym after the kids are in bed is too exhausting to contemplate. Gym membership is also expensive, even more so if you are on maternity leave. I think that when you have had children, many people need to find a different route into exercise.

I have started running. I like the fact that I can quickly pop out before the children wake up and be back in 30 minutes or so. If someone is home I can just nip out at nap time too. But I have found that running didn’t quite give me the all over workout I was looking for and when the weather was bad I wasn’t inclined to go.

Then a new business called Mummy Workouts got in touch to see if I wanted to review their new online workouts aimed at mothers. You pay a monthly fee and you can take part in as many classes as you like. You just set your laptop up in a room where you have some space, turn the webcam on and you have a virtual exercise class. The instructor can see you to give you feedback and check your progress but the other participants can’t see you.

I tried this for two weeks and I thought it was a great idea. The instructors are really enthusiastic and friendly and completely understanding if your child wanders in and out – in fact they welcome it as family fitness is part of their ethos. I was a little wary of the weirdness of working out with the web cam on but it was great because then unlike a workout DVD you can get feedback from your instructor.

I tried the total body workouts, yoga and the stretch classes. I would say that they are not easy but once you get into them and participate more they get easier. I love the fact that I don’t have to go out of the house to do a class but the fact that they are timed encourages me not to put it off or miss it the way I might do if it was a DVD.

At the moment they have classes on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30 and 8.15. They plan to bring on more classes and also the option to watch a recorded class if you miss one of the live ones. Membership starts from £8 a month if you sign up for a year or £12 a month if you take it monthly. Obviously this is great value compared to a gym membership and I like the fact that you get different and changing classes with feedback from a instructor for such a great price.

Mummy Workouts are offering a free 7day trial to their online classes. Click here to give it a go….it’s worth a try – I love it and am signing up for more!

Disclosure – I was given a free 14 day trial for the purpose of this review. All opinions are honest and my own.
