Review: Porthkerry Park, Barry

Sometimes, the kids get antsy at the weekend, they need to burn some energy, get some fresh air, and we grown ups need to get out of the house before the antsy kids drive us wild.

It is easy in the winter months to go to soft play, or something indoors, but this costs money, which no one has much of at the moment, so we decided to have a cheap and cheerful Saturday afternoon in Porthkerry Park.

This park is fab, it has oodles and oodles of open space, woods, a playground, cafe, toilets and a stony beach. It is heaven on earth for kids who need to expend a little energy!

It was cold so we wrapped up warm, put our coats and hats on and dug out the wellies. Bean and Jelly took turns to ride the scooter (must get Jelly her own one!) and we threw stones into the sea, played in the playground and went on an adventure in the woods (this was the best bit for Bean!).

We studiously avoided the cafe as we were having a cheap day and after a couple of hours headed home for some delicious proper hot chocolate – recipe here.

Days out like this are great, they are free, the kids get loads of exercise and fresh air and you can have so much fun with nature – splashing in puddles and picking up leaves to rub later.

I want to do lots more like this over  the winter months! And it is a great excuse to have hot chocolate when you get back!
