Stick Man by Julia Donaldson is JB’s absolute favourite book to read with me. I read it in funny voices and it is a night time tradition almost now! You can imagine my delight when I discovered that Stick Man was coming to the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff courtesy of Scamp Theatre.
We love the Sherman and it was truly buzzing on this afternoon. The girls are so at home there they ran straight in and got exploring the busy foyer and the little activities and book stall that was there. A Stick Man badge later and they were ready to go in and see the show!
What I particularly liked about this performance was the minimalist and open set. Props were imaginative, colourful and appealing to the children. They really captured their imagination too; snow was depicted with embellished umbrellas, a river with a large strip of blue paper and sand with a large decorated sheet.
The three actors took on all the roles and figurines represented the stick family characters. JB was delighted to see her beloved Stick Man in real life!
The performance was interactive and had a panto style element to it. I certainly have never been to a show where a beach ball has been batted into the audience before but it was so much fun and really engaging for the little ones! The show is aimed at children age 3 + but there was something for all ages there, colourful and musical enough for younger children, funny enough for older children and there were even a couple of jokes thrown in there for the grown ups! It was a shame that the show hadn’t come around Christmas time though as it would have been even more special considering the theme of the book.
We had a fantastic afternoon at the Sherman, and we are off there again next week to see Mermaid. I can’t wait!
