Ok I’m going to hold my hands up – I hate the idea of baby led weaning. I know, I know it is super fashionable at the moment, and pretty much everyone I know is really ‘into’ it but it is not for me. It’s not that I can’t see the benefits, it’s that I can’t bear to see my baby boy gagging on food. To me it doesn’t seem natural or safe and I can’t bear to do it.
My girls were both weaned on puree and Baby Sprout will be weaned the same way too. We started him on some basic fruit and vegetable and baby rice purees when he was 21 weeks and now that he is 6 months old he is eating three meals a day and I can honestly say that he loves absolutely everything we have given him.
I batch cook purees in silicone ice cube trays and put them into freezer bags. Then I can just put a mixture of cubes into a bowl, defrost them in the microwave and they are ready to go. This way I can make him a number of combinations of meals with little fuss.
I am not averse to giving him pre-prepared baby food when we are out and about or if we are really in a rush – everything in moderation, just most of the time I would prefer he had homemade food.
Now he is a little bit older I am going to start making him some actual meals – I like the Annabel Karmel recipes and freezing those to defrost when needed. I’ll also start giving him some little portions of our family meals, pureed or mashed up so he gets a taste for what we actually eat. This worked really well with JB and she was a great eater when she was smaller.
I plan on blogging some baby puree and family food recipes so keep an eye out for that!
