I absolutely love urban modern interior design. If you haven't heard of this trend before it is basically a hybrid of modern, contemporary and industrial designs. It is less harsh than full industrial designs and gives a really open, light and natural look. If you are thinking about incorporating this style into your home read on for some tips on where to start.
Create a light space
A key element of a modern interior design is to create a light and open space. You want to go for a minimalist theme with no clutter and large open spaces in your room. It is not a design to go for if you have a lot of belongings as you need to be able to create a feeling of space. You will want the rooms to be light and airy so think large windows and glass doors and bright lighting. Where you have lots of glass in a room toughened glass is always the better and safer choice, especially if you have children.
Choose natural colours
Natural colours work best in a modern urban design home. Go for wooden or stone flooring and think about keeping some exposed beams, brick or stonework to bring in some natural colours. For furnishings think about brown, yellow and green tones, perhaps contrasted with some statement black lines on furniture and coupled with white walls. White walls always provide a bright, airy and modern feel and will go well with the earthy tones in this modern design theme.
Use soft furnishings
You will want to create some feature contrasts by marrying the industrial style fixtures and fittings with soft, comfortable furnishings. Cosy rugs and large comfortable sofas will provide the perfect contrast to modern lines, decor and lighting. An urban modern interior is softer and more cosy than a minimalist modern or industrial style so these softer furnishings are the perfect way to soften the edges of the decor somewhat.
Combine textures and materials
With an urban modern interior it looks fantastic when textures and materials are combined. For example a large comfortable sofa with throws and cushions and rugs made of natural materials. This softens the feel of the more industrial style surroundings and creates warm, comfortable areas in your home to relax in. A sofa and throw with a backdrop of an exposed stone wall or a fluffy rug on a concrete floor are great examples of texture mixing.
Add statement pieces
Urban modern interior design is all about big statement pieces and you should look to include one in every room. Go for a large piece of art, be it on the wall or a sculpture or beautiful piece of furniture. You could choose bold curtains or blinds or a statement rug. This provides a focal point and a chic edge to the otherwise minimalist decor and really sets this interior trend apart.
