Ski Season is upon us which is exciting! Ski holidays are so much fun but you do need to be prepared if it is your first time going. I've put together a little list of equipment that you might need for your first skiing trip. Simply Hike have a great range of outdoor wear, from camping and hiking gear to skiing equipment so it's well worth a look.
Layers
You'll want to wear layers when you are skiing. First a base layer such as long johns and thermal underwear. Next on your top you will want a mid-layer such as a jumper or hoodie etc. Over the top you will want skiing trousers or sallopettes - either dungarees style or trousers. On top then you will want a good quality skiing jacket.
A Good Jacket
For evenings when you are not skiing or wandering out in the daytime a decent winter coat is useful. The North Face have some great winter jackets which will do the job very well.
Footwear
On your feet you will want to wear skiing socks. You can wear thick socks such as rugby socks but generally these aren't as good so it's worth investing in special skiing socks.
Moon / Snow boots are not essential but really useful, especially for getting to and from Mountain/piste and evenings. Not essential but really useful, especially if your chalet or hotel is somewhere it is snowing rather than off the mountain.
You will need skiing boots but unless you ski regularly it's easier and cheaper to rent these from your ski resort.
Accessories
Most heat is lost through your head an extremities so don't forget gloves, a scarf and a hat / beanie.
You will want reflective skiing sunglasses or goggles to keep the sun out of your eyes and reduce the glare from the bright white snow.
A ski lift pass holder is really useful. They are retractable, rather like an office pass and they make it easier to get at your ski pass and keep it safe on you.
Don't forget the suncream too - even though it's cold the sun reflects from the white snow and otherwise you might get sunburnt - and tan lines from goggles aren't a good look!
If you are into handy gadgets have a look for some useful but not essential bits such as hip flasks and an iPod holder that is protective in case you fall.
Make sure that you take a helmet with you or at least rent one while you are there. Better safe than sorry.
Lastly and most definitely not least you will need skis. Like ski boots, unless you are a regular skier you will probably just want to rent these when you get there.

Great choices! I love the jacket. I only went skiing once in my life (strange as I grew up in Canada) and Whistler was so incredibly beautiful. My husband really wants to go so we're thinking of doing it next year.

Oh I'd love to go skiing again one day, I was lucky enough to go for the millennium, so quite a while ago now. I loved it!

It's been over twenty years since I skied last, would you believe? I used to love it, but alas, there are no slopes where I live now.

This is so handy for me as Iām planning to go skiing soon!

I have to admit, I'm not a massive fan of skiing. I've been once on a dry slope and once on a real slope in Austria - I hired everything though, didn't buy it lol. I think if you're a regular skier though, purchasing these sort of items would be really handy x
