7 Things Every Smart Parent Should Do

    Apr 14, 2025 by Ali · Leave a Comment

Parenting is as hard as it is rewarding, and it can be difficult to get it right and ensure that those tiny humans you are responsible for get the best possible start in life, so let me help you out with the seven things every smart parent should do…

    1. Make Finances a Family Affair

Now, before you roll your eyes at yet another mention of 'budgeting,' let's clarify: this doesn't have to be a dreary spreadsheet marathon. Instead, approach finances together as a family-yes, that means chatting openly with your partner, and when age-appropriate, with your kids. Show them how money works, where it goes, and why certain biscuits are too expensive to justify five packs a week. Including them in small decisions helps them feel more responsible-and might save you a few extra quid.

    2. Encourage Curiosity (Even When It's Inconvenient)

Ever felt you were starring in your own quiz show, with your child firing off endless "why" questions? As maddening as it can get, curiosity is a sign your child's mind is buzzing with ideas. Embrace it. If you don't know the answer, Google it together, find a fun documentary, or experiment in the kitchen. Okay, you might end up knee-deep in flour, but you'll also be rewarding their thirst for knowledge-and scoring major 'cool parent' points.

    3. Help Them Learn from Mistakes

It's tempting to rush in and rescue your child when things go wrong. (Hands up if you've ever frantically finished a child's school project at midnight to spare them a bad grade.) But stepping back and letting them face natural consequences-within reason, of course-helps them learn resilience. These small stumbles now can foster the grit they'll need when real life starts throwing curveballs (hello, teenage heartbreaks and botched job interviews).

    4. Save for Their Future

You don't have to be a finance wizard to prepare for your child's future. Simple investments, Junior ISAs, or even dabbling in stocks (if you're feeling adventurous) can all help. Different countries have their own perks-check out these RESP benefits in Canada for example-so poke around for any relevant schemes in your neck of the woods. After all, teenagers have an uncanny knack for announcing expensive educational ambitions when you're least expecting it.

    5. Nurture Their Passions (Even the Odd Ones)

Sure, you might have daydreamed about your child becoming the next Beethoven, but if they're more into beatboxing or building Minecraft empires, that's okay! Supporting their genuine interests is a brilliant way to boost their self-esteem. And who knows? Today's strange hobby might turn into tomorrow's promising career. Stranger things have happened, right?

    6. Be Their Safe Space

In a world full of school drama, social media hype, and that one unpredictable cousin, children need somewhere to unwind and be themselves. Make home that safe space-where they know they can speak freely without fear of scorn or immediate lecturing. Listening (really listening) is one of the best gifts you can give, second only to the unconditional love that keeps them grounded.

    7. Keep Your Sense of Humor

Last, but absolutely not least, remember to laugh. Whether you're surviving a sleep-deprived day or contending with a toddler meltdown in aisle three, a dash of humor goes a long way. Laughter bonds families, reduces stress, and reminds you that it's all just part of this amazing rollercoaster called parenting.
