A royal occasion: spending the day at Buckingham Palace

    Colab post

During a trip to London, you may want to see where the late Queen Elizabeth II spent some of her time. This may help you to understand a bit more about royal life, as well as pay your respects to both her and the new King. Taking a trip to Buckingham Palace can be both awe-inspiring and humbling. You may not only learn about the monarchy, but also a bit about British history.

    Booking ahead

Whether you want to get afternoon tea, see the guard change, or be taken on an interior tour, it can usually be a good idea to book ahead of time. Certain times, especially during school holidays, may be far busier than others. Having a set date and time to visit can also be helpful in allowing you to plan other activities. You can go to this page to see what is on offer at Buckingham Palace, as well as the dates available and prices. Then, it can be a simple matter of looking at your budget, existing itinerary, and travel dates to work out which excursion will suit you and your family best.

    Historic architecture

While this royal residence can be fascinating for those who follow the monarchy, it may also be of interest to those who have a deep interest in history. In particular, the architecture of the buildings and grounds can be fascinating. Buckingham Palace was initially built in 1703 by the Duke of Buckingham. It only fell back into royal hands in 1761, when purchased by King George III. The palace and its grounds have been renovated and extended since that time, but most of the original architecture remains the same. This means that, when you go on your tour, you may be walking in the same rooms that people spent time in hundreds of years ago. Knowing this, and thinking about all the history the palace has seen, can be rather humbling.

    The local area

Although there may be a lot to see at Buckingham Palace, you may also want to take a look around Westminster as well. As part of this, it can be good to figure out which attractions to go to and where to eat ahead of time. This could include getting breakfast before you tour the palace or having dinner overlooking the Thames once you are done. Planning out some of the fundamental aspects of your day can allow you to spend more time enjoying your tours, rather than needing to discuss or think about where to go next. Overall, this can help to make the most of your time.

Visiting Buckingham Palace is something that both British nationals and tourists alike wish to do while in London. You may find that visiting Buckingham Palace is a completely different experience since Queen Elizabeth's passing, however booking a tour is a great way of learning more about the royal site, its history and what the new era of royals may look like
