Cotton vs Polyester: When To Wear Each Material

    Sep 11, 2025 · Modified: Dec 11, 2025 by Ali · Leave a Comment

Should you wear cotton or polyester? Both fabrics are hugely popular in today's clothing and each one has its pros and cons. In this post, we'll face off the two fabrics against each other and determine when you should wear each material.

    The pros of cotton

Cotton is the classic choice for most clothing: it's a natural plant-based material that has been used for centuries and is very versatile. It has a more matte appearance than polyester and can be dyed in many colours. Some of cotton's biggest benefits include:

    • Breathability: Cotton promotes airflow, helping to keep your body cooler.
    • Comfort: The natural fibers of cotton are soft and gentle on sensitive skin.
    • Eco-friendliness: Organic cotton is biodegradable and can be sustainably sourced. If you're looking for sustainable options, consider shopping for organic clothing made from ethically sourced cotton.

    When to wear cotton…

When you want to stay cool on a hot summer's day

Cotton is an excellent choice for casual summer clothing because of its breathability and ability to keep the wearer cool. It's often used for sundresses and summer t-shirts.

When looking for clothes to sleep or relax in

Due to its softness and breathability, cotton also makes a cozy choice for loungewear and nightwear items like pyjamas or a night dress.

When you have skin allergies or sensitive skin

The soft natural fibers of cotton are less likely to cause rashes or eczema than polyester. It is generally regarded as a hypoallergenic fabric.

    The pros of polyester

Polyester is a synthetic material made from petroleum-based polymers. Although a relatively new fabric, it is similarly used in a diverse array of clothing. It has a more shiny texture. Some of the greatest pros of polyester are:

    • Moisture management: Polyester is moisture-wicking - sweat and moisture is transferred to the outside of the material where it dries faster.
    • Wrinkle resistance: Unlike cotton, polyester does not shrink, stretch or wrinkle easily.
    • Affordability: Clothing made from polyester is generally cheaper to produce and purchase than clothing made from cotton.

    When to wear polyester…

On a humid or rainy day

Polyester doesn't get soaked and heavy like cotton, and is a good choice for rain jackets or t-shirts in humid conditions.

    When you're doing exercise

The moisture-wicking properties of polyester also stop it from getting soaked with sweat when working out, plus it's very stretchy. It's a top choice for workout clothing like leggings and gym tops.

When you want to avoid creases

If you're travelling and need to keep a suit or shirt wrinkle-free, look into polyester blends. Cotton is more likely to crease if not hung from a hanger.

Final thoughts on choosing the right fabric

Cotton clothing is generally a good choice for most everyday clothing - especially if you have sensitive skin or live in a hot dry climate.

Polyester is a better choice for workout clothing or clothing worn in the rain. It's also a good choice if you want clothing to not get wrinkles.

Ultimately, there is no winner - both have their own unique applications. Much of their appeal can come down to personal preference as to which feels and looks better. Therefore it can be worth having items made from both fabrics in your wardrobe.
