If you're hoping to ignite a spark in your relationship, then a change of surroundings might provide exactly the required kindling. While the impending arrival of Christmas and the New Year might now be dominating the calendar, it's worth remembering that Valentine's Day will follow shortly afterwards. So, where might you be spending it? Let's take a look at a few romantic destinations that Europe has to offer.

    Paris

The French capital enjoys a reputation around the world as a city of romance. There are several iconic attractions to visit in this part of the world, including the Jardin du Palais Royal and the Eiffel Tower. But it's the lesser-known corners of the city that really have the potential to generate those real magical moments. You might happen upon a little bakery or café that really makes the break memorable.

    Italy

Italy is, arguably, the most important country on the continent when it comes to history and culture. From the Roman Empire to the city-states of the Italian Renaissance to the Catholic Church, this is a country that's brimming with amazing galleries, ruins and museums. If you're in search of a romantic backdrop, then you'll find it in the form of vineyards, beaches, and piazzas. You might tour the Amalfi coast, or go on a canal ride through Venice, or go on one of the amazing walking holidays that Italy has to offer.

    Santorini

It's difficult to overlook the appeal of the island of Santorini. This little corner of Greece is perhaps the most popular with tourists, meaning that you'll need to contend with crowds during peak season. But it's easy to see why when you find yourself confronted by gorgeously little whitewashed villages, remote historic monasteries and incredible local cuisine. Then, when the evening draws in, you can watch the sunset over the Mediterranean.

    Amsterdam

When it comes to fun and culture, there's no city in Europe that's quite like Amsterdam. By day, you might find yourself touring the Rijksmuseum, marvelling at Rembrandts, Van Goghs and Vermeers; by night, you might spend time unwinding with the help of the city's vibrant clubs, pubs and bars. If you want to get around the city in the local style, then you might rent a pair of bikes or even a tandem.

    Gozo

You might think of Malta as an island nation in the middle of the Mediterranean - but the truth is that it's actually several islands. The second-largest of these, Gozo, is less crowded than the main island, which makes it an excellent location for those seeking seclusion and incredible scenery. Make time for some of the religious ruins: they're among the oldest in the world!

    Sibiu

Sibiu is a hidden gem of romance and history in Romania. This picturesque city often hailed as the heart of Transylvania is perfect for couples seeking a blend of culture and charm. Wander hand in hand through the historic Old Town, explore the mysterious Liars' Bridge, or enjoy a cozy meal at a local gourmet café. The city's vibrant squares, lined with colorful Baroque buildings are perfect for a romantic city break, especially during the magical golden hour. If you're planning a holiday in Romania, Sibiu should be at the top of your list.
