How to choose your perfect engagement ring

    Sep 25, 2025 by Ali · Leave a Comment

Choosing an engagement ring is an exciting and deeply personal decision. Whether you're a traditionalist, a trendsetter or somewhere in between, the process can be overwhelming.

You may feel drawn to a specific style, or you might have no idea where to begin. Either way, taking a thoughtful approach will ensure that the ring you choose is as meaningful as it is beautiful.

    Researching styles and trends

There's no shortage of options, from classic solitaires to modern halo settings and vintage-inspired designs. By all means, take inspiration from recent celebrity engagements but remember to think about how the design will reflect your partner's personality. Do they favour minimalism or are they drawn to something more elaborate?

Coloured stones like sapphires and emeralds have surged in popularity recently, while pear-shaped diamonds have also made a comeback. Incorporating a contemporary style or an on-trend detail can make the ring feel special, but the key is to balance trends with personal preference and timelessness.

    Choosing the stone

While diamonds remain the most popular option, consider other precious stones like sapphires, rubies or even moissanite. Each has its own set of characteristics and understanding these will help you make an informed choice.

If you do go with a diamond, pay attention to the four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. The cut of the stone will impact its sparkle, so a well-cut diamond is more important than size alone.

    Selecting the right metal

Popular options include yellow and white gold, platinum and rose gold. Each has distinct advantages, so consider both aesthetics and durability. For instance, platinum is incredibly strong and resistant to tarnishing, making it a great choice for someone with an active lifestyle or who prefers a more substantial feel. On the other hand, rose gold is warm and romantic, adding a unique, vintage touch to the overall design.

Think about how the metal complements your partner's style, as well as how it will wear over time. Some metals, like white gold, may require periodic rhodium plating to maintain their shine, while others, like platinum, naturally develop a patina over the years, adding character to the piece.

    Balancing budget, practicality and meaning

It's easy to get caught up in the idea of spending a fortune, but the price doesn't determine its significance. Take the time to set a realistic budget that works for both of you and make sure to consider the sentimental value that engagement rings offer, not just the price tag.

You might choose to invest more in the stone and opt for a simpler band, or perhaps you'll prioritise the design and choose a smaller stone. Whichever approach you take, ensure the ring reflects both your relationship and practical needs.

Finally, make sure that you choose a reputable retailer, backed by the National Association of Jewellers. This will give you peace of mind, knowing that you're purchasing from a trusted source.
