Over lockdown I have been entertaining myself by decorating the house. I've painted two bedrooms, the hallway and the living room. I really enjoy decorating and updating rooms quite frequently, but sadly money isn't always plentiful and it certainly isn't at the moment so I have been making changes on a budget and I thought I would share my top tips on how to decorate on a budget.

    Paint everything white

This is my number one top tip. White paint is relatively inexpensive and it can really freshen up a room. You can buy it in big tubs which is more cost effective too. Once your room is painted white you can easily update the room as and when you want by changing the accessories, or even just having a feature wall in a different colour. It means you won't have to redecorate the whole room every time you fancy a change too.

Use vinyl stickers to add character

I painted all three of my children's bedrooms white and jazzed them up with vinyl stickers. This meant that when my little girl grew out of pink in a couple of years, I didn't have to redecorate the whole room, I simply peeled off the old stickers and chose new ones. You can get all sorts of wall stickers , from wall quotes to patterns to full on murals. They look great in children's rooms especially and can make the room look amazing, their friends will love it!

    Change the room accessories

As I've already mentioned, if you have quite a blank canvas for your room you can make a huge difference to how it looks by just changing the accessories and that really makes a difference when you are looking for how to decorate on a budget. For example, in a bedroom you can change the colour scheme by changing the bedding and cushions and adding a rug and changing any prints on the wall. The same goes for a living space such as the front room. You can create a totally different look by changing the rug, adding new cushions and maybe even changing lampshades. Personally I love the striking effect that gold lamp shades give. You can even get vinyl rugs now which are a great budget friendly and practical way to revamp a room easily.

    Add colour to wall tiles

Wall tiles can be expensive to replace but if they are looking old and grubby or the wrong colour they can really affect how a room looks. You can paint them cheaply a different colour or if you want to go for a pattern you can look into tile stickers that are easy to stick on the top.

    Be thrifty

You don't need to spend much money to make updates to a room. Check out eBay or local facebook selling sites for bargains. Shop in the sales and antique shops and charity shops. Be mindful of what you get rid of, you could store away bedding for when you might want to change the look again and instead of getting rid of cushions you could just make covers for them to change the look cheaply. Walk around your house and gather up nic nacs and accessories, simply moving them to a new location can give you a whole new look.

I hope that you found this post on how to decorate on a budget useful. If you liked it please share it with your friends or Pin it for later.
