How to keep your children from wanting more screen time

In today's digital age, it can be challenging to limit the amount of screen time our children are exposed to. Nowadays smartphones, tablets, and televisions are readily available. It's easy for kids to become engrossed in screens for hours on end. However, excessive screen time can have negative effects on a child's physical and mental health. Are you afraid that your child is exposed to too much screen time and are you looking for ways to reduce it?

    Create a screen time schedule

One effective way to limit your child's screen time is to create a schedule that outlines when they are allowed to use devices. For example, you could designate specific times during the day when your child can have screen time, such as after completing homework or chores. Or just set a certain  time frame in which your young child is able to enjoy screentime. By having a set schedule, your child will know when they are allowed to use screens and when they need to engage in other activities.

    Introduce alternative activities

Instead of relying on screens for entertainment, encourage your child to engage in other activities that promote creativity and physical activity. It is of importance to create the right environment for this. Consider setting up a craft station where your child can paint, draw, or make DIY projects. You could also introduce board games, puzzles, or outdoor activities like biking or playing in the park. Offering a variety of alternative activities is of importance.

    Limit access to screens

Keep smartphones, tablets, and other screens out of your child's bedroom to prevent them from using them. A bedroom is not meant for these kinds of devices. Especially in the bedroom it is of importance to create a safe and incentive-free environment. Invest in a good toddler bed , some necessary furniture and some decoration. Overall we recommend keeping the decoration simplistic. Of course it's a great idea to store some books in the bedroom as well.

Consider implementing other screen-free zones in your home as well, such as the dining room or living room, where screens are not allowed. By setting boundaries early on around screen usage, you can help your child develop healthier habits.

    Set a good example

Children often mimic the behavior of their parents, so it's important to set a good example when it comes to screen time. Show your child the importance of spending quality time together as a family without the distraction of devices. By modeling healthy screen habits, you can encourage your child to do the same.

    Encourage physical play

Physical activity is crucial for a child's overall development, so make sure to incorporate plenty of playtime into your child's daily routine. Set up a play area in your home with toys like a doll house or building blocks where your child can use their imagination and engage in pretend play. Take your child to the park for some outdoor play or enroll them in sports or dance classes. By encouraging physical activity, you can help your child burn off energy and reduce their desire for screen time.
