A bigger bathroom is something a lot of people dream of. Unless you are exploring the option of building a physical extension, there isn't much you can do when it comes to adding more square footage. Not all of us have the luxury to extend, which leaves many of us feeling stuck with our compact bathrooms, and a little frustrated with the space shortage situation.

If you are eager for your bathroom to visually look bigger and to have that extra bit of space you crave, then it's not impossible. It's about understanding how to incorporate some changes to make your bathroom look and feel more spacious.

You will probably have heard of various theories related to space enlargement across living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens, all incorporating tricks and tips. The same applies to a bathroom. Just because you tend to have a bath, toilet and basin all rooted into place, doesn't mean there is no way of creating the illusion of a larger space.

Before we go ahead with some tips to follow, remember that no matter what you do to update your bathroom, it will always be a small-sized room. However, with a few visual illusions, colour updates, lighting tricks and decor edits, you can transform your compact and cramped bathroom into something more pleasing to the eye.

Why not take some bathroom inspiration from our tricks listed below?

    Change the storage cabinets

We all have that important vanity cabinet which is used as a storage solution for bath products, towels, toilet rolls or whatever else we choose to hide away. It's worth considering just how much space your current cabinet takes up, and if it could make way for more floor or bath space.

A modern touch that has become popular is to consider wall-mounted sinks which have a cabinet combined. These can be fairly inexpensive and take away any bulky cabinets that would usually sit aside from your basin.

If this isn't possible, look to the walls for finding alternative storage space. Small shelves are also a great option as these can be fixed to the wall, neatly storing folded towels, candles or any bathroom signs and accessories you may have.

    Go for sleek, minimalistic finishings

The more details and intricate patterns you have in a bathroom just creates more 'noise' in the room. Where possible, make sure that all fittings and fixtures are clean, modern and minimal. Straight away, dainty handles and sleek taps give that premium feel, creating a clutter-free, easy-on-the-eye appearance.

Have a look at all the taps around the room. Are they chunky with large twisting mechanisms, or feature elements of colour? It's surprising how elegant, chrome taps can contribute to a more spacious illusion. There are also many taps nowadays which feature just one tap for the flow of water, and a small handle to control hot and cold water. You can find lots of tap ideas which save space and give off a chic look, with Bathdisc being a great place to start when shopping for taps.

    Brighten up the space

Extra lighting is a winner when it comes to updating a bathroom, mainly because it doesn't take up any counter space, yet it magically opens up the room in an instance.

Have a look at the room and identify the areas which are lacking in natural daylight. Dull corners or dimly lit rooms will always look smaller, but these are the spaces which can be transformed much more easily. One lighting option is recessed lighting, which is often installed in the ceiling and be fitted where it focuses on a certain part of the room.

Other popular options are to add skylights to the ceiling so the whole room is lit up well. An obvious option is to have larger windows, but this isn't always possible in some homes.

    Avoid anything that sticks out

When an object or piece of furniture sticks out, your eyes automatically focus on it, and won't always look past it. Try to identify anything in your bathroom that currently does this, like hanging racks, chunky cabinets or decorative accessories on the walls. They might only stick out a little bit, but yet visually cut into the room and make it look smaller.

    Choose mirrored finishes where possible

Everyone knows how mirrors are great at reflecting light and allowing it to bounce around the room. If you can, have a large mirror positioned above the bathroom sink. If the window is on the same side at the sink and mirror, place another one facing the sink. Between the window and the mirrors, natural daylight will reflect off each other and naturally light the room. As well as this, it will give the illusion of a never-ending space!

If it's just the one mirror that your bathroom walls can handle, look at investing in shiny surfaces where possible. Think about mirrored cupboard doors, mirrored bins or even mirrored toothbrush and toothpaste holder jars! The high-shine, metallic look that mirrored bathrooms give also never date either.

Along with the tips above, remember that a clean, neat and tidy bathroom always looks much larger than a cluttered one which needs a good clean! It's impressive how much bigger a room looks by switching up numerous fittings, fixtures and visual elements, without the need to physically extend!
