How to survive an airport delay

    Jan 6, 2025 by Ali · Leave a Comment

    Colab post

Airport delays can be a frustrating curveball in your travel plans, but they don't have to ruin your day.

Whether it's due to bad weather, a technical glitch, or just bad luck, being stuck in an airport terminal for hours on end can feel like a real waste of your time.

But here's the thing: you've got options! Instead of sitting there stewing over the delay, why not treat it as an opportunity to try some new things, indulge yourself, or simply rest and recharge.

With a little creativity and a positive mindset, you can turn an inconvenience into a productive or even enjoyable experience. Here's our guide for how to survive an airport delay.

A man sits in an airport lounge, feet propped on his suitcase, pondering travel tips as he gazes at a plane taking off. He's trying to survive an airport delay with a calm composure.

    Enjoy Digital Distractions

Let's be real - your phone is often your best friend during a delay. It's not just a device for scrolling aimlessly; it's a pocket-sized entertainment powerhouse.

Why not fire up your favourite streaming platform to binge a show or download that podcast series you've been meaning to catch up on. Airports usually offer free or very low-cost Wi-Fi too, so you don't even have to worry about using your data.

Many airports have free charging ports in their waiting areas too, so you can keep your smartphone battery topped up. It's worth keeping your cable in your hand luggage, so this is super easy to access.

If you're into gaming, you could dive into some mobile slots or other rapid-play online games to pass the time. These quick-hit games are perfect for keeping your brain occupied without too much effort.

Not a gamer? Why not use the time to connect with friends or family via video chat or social media. You can catch up on posts or news and forget about the delay for a while.

    Explore and Get Active

Airports aren't just rows of seats and departure gates - they're small cities. Many larger airports - like the World's Best, as recommended by experts - have shopping centres, art exhibits, and even fitness spaces.

Take a stroll and explore the terminal to get some 'steps' in. Walking around not only stretches your legs but also gives you something new to look at, breaking up the monotony of waiting around by the departure gate.

You could also check out the stores. Even if you're not planning to buy anything, browsing can be fun and give you some ideas for future gifts. Some airports have local souvenir shops or specialty boutiques worth visiting too, to pick up some last-minute items with any leftover currency.

    Try Relaxation Techniques

Delays can trigger stress, so it's a good idea to actively unwind. Find a quiet area or one of those reclining chairs you often see near windows. Airports are loud, but noise-cancelling headphones or a soothing playlist can block out the chaos.

If you're feeling frazzled, try a short meditation session. Expert-recommended apps like Calm or Headspace can guide you through breathing exercises to help you feel grounded.

Calming music can be great too, such as relaxing classical playlists to ease your feelings of stress and put you in a more peaceful mindset.

If meditation or calm music isn't your thing, focus on self-care in other ways - hydrate, grab a healthy snack, or even treat yourself to a mini spa service if the airport offers it. You'll board your flight feeling refreshed rather than drained.

Next time a delay hits, don't let it get the better of you. Use these strategies to make the most of your time. Whether you're exploring, gaming, or meditating, you'll be surprised at how quickly the hours fly by. Travel is unpredictable, but your mindset doesn't have to be.
