    Make Screen Time Healthier Time

    Jun 13, 2024 by Ali · Leave a Comment

    Colab post

From the moment we blink open our eyes to the minute we close them, our screens are pretty much always within an arm's reach, serving up a steady diet of information, entertainment, and, let's be honest, a fair bit of time-wasting. But what if we could transform screen time from our guilty pleasure into a powerhouse of productivity and learning? Yes, it's possible, and yes, we're going to show you how…

    1. Make Game Time Education Time

Long gone are the days when "educational" meant boring. Today's educational games are a far cry from the clunky software of yesteryear. We're talking about vibrant puzzles, strategy games that outsmart your old chess club, and interactive story adventures that could give any blockbuster movie a run for its money. Whether it's building empires in Civilization that teach history and critical thinking,  playing a quick game of minesweeper to boost your logic, or solving intricate puzzles in Portal that stretch your spatial reasoning, these games entertain while they educate. Who knew revising could be this riveting?

    2. App-tastic Learning

Transform screen time into a secret educational session with apps designed to boost brain power. For kids (and let's be honest, adults too), apps like Duolingo can make mastering a new language as easy as scrolling through TikTok. Or perhaps you fancy becoming a maestro? Yousician turns your musical aspirations into reality with personalised lessons. It's time to level up your skills one tap and swipe at a time.

    3. Schedule Savvy Screen Sessions

Make screen time smarter by scheduling it. Set timers for educational content that align with when you or the kids are most receptive. Maybe it's a brain-boosting session with Khan Academy after dinner, or a morning puzzle challenge with Lumosity to kickstart the day. Just like a good British timetable, keeping a regular schedule makes sure screen time is both fun and fruitful.

    4. Watch, Learn, Discuss

Screen time doesn't have to be a solo mission. Watching documentaries or educational shows can be a family affair. Pop on a David Attenborough special or an episode of MythBusters and gather round. Afterwards, have a chat about what you've learned. This turns passive watching into an active discussion and deepens the learning experience (and maybe even settles a few debates on whether a shark would really beat an octopus).

    5. Tech That Teaches

Okay, let's get a bit techy. Utilise gadgets that require a bit more brainpower than simply pushing the 'on' button. Robotics kits, build-your-own-computer kits, or even smart home devices offer hands-on tech experience with a side of problem-solving. Plus, nothing beats the feeling of telling visitors you built that robot that's bringing them their tea (though, let's keep the tea-making to the humans for now).

    6. Active Screen Time

Who says screen time has to be done sitting down? Get up, get moving. Use fitness apps or even dance games like Just Dance to shake up your routine. Not only is it great exercise, but it's also ridiculously fun. Challenge the family to a dance-off-loser does the washing up!

    7. The Great Outdoors, Indoors

Yes, we're suggesting you bring a bit of the outside world inside. Use apps and games related to nature and the environment to educate about the planet. Then, take it further by applying what you've learned in your garden or during your next ramble in the countryside. It's like homework, but with fresher air and real-life textures.

    8. Interactive E-Books and Audiobooks

Embrace the world of interactive e-books and audiobooks which can transform solitary reading into an engaging, multi-sensory experience. Choose books that include puzzles, hidden sound effects, or narration to enhance storytelling. This can improve listening skills, comprehension, and even entice reluctant readers to dive into the joys of literature.

    9. Virtual Reality Experiences

Virtual Reality offers an immersive way to learn and explore new environments from the comfort of your home. Whether it's walking through historical sites, diving deep into the ocean, or exploring outer space, VR can make learning incredibly vivid and interactive. It's a fantastic way to make complicated subjects more accessible and exciting.

    10. Mindfulness and Relaxation Apps

Incorporate apps that promote mindfulness and relaxation into screen time routines. Apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided meditations, soothing music, and bedtime stories that can help wind down the brain before sleep, making screen time a tool for tranquility rather than tension.

    11. Digital Detox-Yes, Really

And finally, balance is key. Make sure there's time away from screens as well. Encourage other hobbies-maybe those that involve mud, paint, or the odd scraped knee. Remember, the best memories often come from the messiest activities!

As you can see, it is totally possible to make screen time not just an everyday routine, but an avenue to a healthier, smarter, fun, life. So, you really don't have to worry about letting the kids log on from time to time.
