Making your home a safer place for small children

    Jan 24, 2023 by Ali · Leave a Comment

    Colab post

If you've got a baby on the way or you've just moved into a new property, then you'll be looking to make it as safe as possible for your small children. Although safe for the most part, the home has many dangers to look out for and if they're not then they become seriously injured. This may lead to them having to go to A&E for their injuries to be treated. However, with current wait times estimated to be around 4 hours, this is something you'll want to avoid completely.

That's why making your home a safer place for your small children is a must. This will help to keep your child safe from harm whilst also easing the burden of constantly worrying about their safety.

Not sure how you can do that? We can help. Our comprehensive guide will cover some of the more dangerous areas in the house and explain how you can effectively protect your child from them. Read on to find out more.

    Cover your edges

The edges of any furniture can be very unsafe for children to be around. They may hit their head or cut themselves if they fall into them. That's why using soft materials like cloths or proper corner guards can help. These will make the edges less sharp, so hopefully, any collisions with them will have fewer consequences.

    Secure your cupboard doors

Cupboards in rooms like the kitchen are filled with items that could fall and cause serious damage to children. That's why cupboard doors should be firmly locked to keep these items out of reach. The easiest way to do that is to install toggle door latches which can prevent accidental openings.

    Prevent slips, trips and falls

Slips, trips and falls are some of the most common injuries in the UK and they can occur in the home too. Common examples of this include cluttered walkways, poor lighting and slippery floors. These can all be easily prevented when you do the following:

    • Remove any items that may cause your child to fall
    • Ensure any spillages are cleaned up straight away
    • Encourage your child to tidy the spaces that they play with their toys in

    Cover electrical outlets

At their height, electrical outlets are easily accessible to babies & small children which may lead to severe danger if they start to touch them. A quick way to fix this issue is to insert safety caps or electrical tapes. You may also wish to keep all cords tidy and out of reach from children as well as they bear a risk to them too.

Keeping your child safe from danger doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. Take the measures listed above to make your home even safer.
