More Than an Empty Shell! The Brain Benefits of Collecting

    Colab post

People collect so many different types of things for different reasons. Many parents may be looking to create great memories for their children, but others are looking to get started with a hobby that will give them some sense of meaning. So if you are considering starting a collection, you may want to make note of some of the following benefits so you and your family can truly build a worthwhile hobby.

    Awakens Knowledge

Learning about something that existed hundreds of years old can give you a thirst for knowledge. For example, if you are someone that wants to get started with collecting watches, learning about the oldest watch brands in the world can be an amazing way for you and your children to get a sense of history about the subject. When you and your children start to learn about the history of the Rolex, you then have to start learning about the founder Hans Wilsdorf, but it also forces you to picture the world at the time. When you have an item in your hands that has been through so many world wars and has changed many hands, you can feel a big part of that history, which makes it more exciting for you and potentially your children.

    Can Improve Your Thinking Skills

Collecting things can be fantastic, especially for children who may need a little bit more encouragement to learn. Collecting works in a number of ways:

    • Enhances pattern recognition. Objects can improve our abilities to recognise specific characteristics in a group, but also detect gaps in a pattern. And this is something that can also help us challenge our own preconceptions of specific items.
    • Improves organisational thinking. Collecting an item means you've got to put it into a category. Whether you're collecting stamps, watches, or coins that can help an individual to be more productive in their thinking which has carryover into other tasks, for example, school papers.
    • Increases observational skills. Learning about the features of an object can help you to bridge the gaps in your knowledge. Building a wide collection of items means you start to become not just observant of the things you are collecting, but more observant of the world in general!

    Can Help With Creativity

Many artists collect items that they find visually stimulating and numerous artists have been influenced by everyday objects that they collected. And the notion of being creative can stem from collecting little items of information and combining them or repurposing them to create something new.

    Can Build Social Connections

If you and your child aren't necessarily great at communicating with each other, it is nothing to be ashamed of. Some people just don't have the gift of the gab, but if you start a collection together, this means you have a common interest, which gives you something to talk about and share in this interest. The fact is that many great friendships come from commonalities, and if you are looking for an amazing way to spend more time with your child and build a better relationship, starting a collection may very well be it!
