The positive impact of animals on mental health

    Feb 1, 2024 by Ali · Leave a Comment

    Colab post

Animals are well-regarded as cherished companions for us humans, providing a positive impact on our daily lifestyles and mental wellbeing.

Research shows that animals are hugely beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety and, in turn, their presence contributes to us leading a happier and healthier life.

In this article, we'll be exploring the wider benefits of animals and how they can help us throughout every stage of our lives.

Creating a bond and sense of purpose

As of 2023, over half of UK households own at least one animal, with an estimated 13 million dogs and 12 million cats living with families across the country. It's said that taking care of an animal can instil a sense of purpose, especially for those suffering from mental health conditions.

Animals are known for boosting feelings of social support and acting as great companions for individuals who live alone. In addition, they help to improve their owner's lifestyles by adding structure to their daily routines and encouraging increased physical activity.

The emotional connection we share with animals is undeniable and one that has evolved over time. Their unconditional love only strengthens that bond, and their ability to understand and respond to our emotions offers support and comfort during difficult times. Not only this, but they allow us to express ourselves without fear of rejection or judgement.

    Benefits for children

Children who grow up around animals will learn to understand responsibility, compassion, and empathy. The love animals have for them can help make your child feel important, encouraging the development of a positive self-image.

As children become emotionally attached to their animals, this allows them to strengthen their relationship-building skills with others. And, putting your child in charge of their animal can help them stay accountable.

Whether they're responsible for feeding hay to small animals or helping you take the family dog out for a walk, each task can build their confidence and teach them good behaviour.

    Benefits for seniors

Animals provide vital companionship to ageing individuals and give a sense of meaning and joy in later life. While you may have retired and lost an element of purpose, animals can boost morale and provide strong feelings of self-worth.

If you have a dog, walking them around your local area can help you meet like-minded people. As you get older, making friends can become difficult. However, animals can help create conversation and help you meet individuals with similar interests.

It can be hard to feel positive if you're starting to feel the physical effects of ageing. However, animals can encourage laughter and playfulness, as well as increasing your physical activity levels if you're exercising a dog. This, in turn, can increase energy and boost your immune system.
