Tips for Planning an Unforgettable Ski Trip with Your Family

    Aug 1, 2024 · Modified: Sep 10, 2024 by Ali · Leave a Comment

Although many families may be packing their bags to enjoy a well-deserved relaxing break in warmer climates this summer, for some a snowy escape for a fun-filled adventure may sound like the ideal family-friendly break. A family ski holiday can be a fantastic way to create lasting memories, but it also requires careful planning. This guide will look at some of the key things to consider when organising your perfect winter getaway.

Two people in red jackets and ski gear are skiing uphill in a snowy mountain landscape, next to a yellow signpost with direction markers, enjoying their planned ski trip.

    Choosing the perfect ski resort

The heart of any successful ski trip lies in selecting the right resort. Consider your family's skiing abilities, age range and desired amenities. For beginners, look for resorts with gentle slopes and dedicated children's areas. More experienced skiers might prefer a resort with a variety of challenging runs.

Family-friendly resorts often offer a range of activities beyond skiing, such as swimming pools, play areas and evening entertainment. Some popular choices for families include the French Alps resorts of Val d'Isère and La Plagne, known for their excellent childcare facilities and wide-ranging terrain. For a more budget-friendly option, consider the charming resorts of Andorra.

If you're looking for a truly unique experience, the Avoriaz ski resort is a fantastic choice . With its pedestrian-only centre and direct access to the Portes du Soleil ski area, it offers a stress-free and family-friendly environment.

    Booking family-friendly accommodations

Choosing the right accommodation is crucial for a relaxing ski holiday. Look for properties that cater to families, with amenities like spacious living areas, well-equipped kitchens and child-friendly facilities. Many resorts offer catered chalets or apartments, providing a convenient and enjoyable experience.

When booking, think carefully about the location of your accommodation in relation to the slopes. Ski-in ski-out properties can save you time and hassle, especially with young children. However, accommodations located a short distance from the slopes can often be more affordable.

    Organising travel and transportation

The next thing you need to determine is how you wish to travel to your chosen destination. Flying to a major airport with good connections to your resort is a convenient option and should give you more scope when it comes to departure times. But for some families with younger children, direct flights could be a better alternative, reducing travel stress.

Once you arrive, you'll need to organise transportation to your accommodation. Many resorts offer shuttle services, which can be incredibly useful, especially if you're travelling with little ones. Alternatively, hiring a car can provide flexibility, but be prepared for winter driving conditions.

    Packing essential ski gear

Packing for a whole family is never an easy task, and this is especially true when it comes to a winter getaway. The key is to pack plenty of layers and ensure everyone has the right gear. Invest in good quality ski jackets, trousers, gloves and goggles for each family member. Don't forget essentials such as thermal base layers, hats and neck warmers. You could consider hiring ski boots and skis at the resort to save space in your luggage. However, if you prefer to bring your own equipment, make sure it's well-protected during travel.

Scheduling ski lessons for all ages

Ski lessons are a great way to improve your technique and build confidence. Most resorts offer lessons for all ages and abilities. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak season.  Many resorts also have dedicated children's ski schools with qualified instructors who specialise in teaching young skiers the ropes. These lessons can be a fun and rewarding experience for children and can help them progress quickly.
