When you have little ones you want to ensure that your home is a safe haven for them, particularly at night or when they start to get that bit older and you start to leave them at home for a few hours. Ensuring that you do all you can to make your home safe and secure will be important to you as a parent. So here are some ideas of what you can do, to make your home a safe space.

    Fit a Burglar Alarm

One of the top things you should do is most definitely install a burglar alarm. This will warn off any potential intruders who attempt to break into your home by sounding the alarm. It can be a good deterrent. So set the alarm tone as loud as possible that way it can be heard immediately by a neighbour so that the police can be called.

Close All Windows When You Are Out

You might be in a hurry and inadvertently leave a window slightly open. But to a passing intruder, this can be very tempting to them, even if the window is only ajar. They could still attempt to climb in, so try to make sure you have windows that are only able to be opened from the interior and not the exterior as well. Also it helps to remember to close them as well every time you leave the house, even for a brief period, as this is all it takes for someone to get into your home and start rummaging through your possessions.

Install a Security Box For Packages

If you are going to be ordering various items online, then you are going to need somewhere for your parcels to be placed, if you do not have an enclosed front porch. It might be worthwhile installing a security box which can be placed near your doorstep for the delivery driver to place any items in. You can create a passcode for them to use when you are not available to answer the door so that they can pop the delivered item in the box, and then just change the passcode each time a delivery is made.

    Include a Home Security Camera

They have become more popular in the last few years, but it is certainly worth investing in a home security camera system which you can link up with your smartphone. This will alert you to anybody that walks up to your house, which is particularly useful when you are not at home so that you can have a look on your smartphone to see who is there and speak to them on the intercom system.

    Don't Leave Expensive Possessions Visible

Thieves can be drawn towards expensive, high tech items or jewellery. So if you do your best to keep these hidden from view, such as near your windows, front door or in your car then you can hopefully prevent opportunistic burglars from having an incentive to break into our home. Close your blinds when you go out so that people can not peer into your front living room to see what kind of expensive possessions you have lying around waiting to be taken.

    Sufficient Locks on The Door

You can never have enough door locks, so you definitely want to make sure that you spend enough money on this as it will be more safe for you and your family. If you have a front porch then this provides a second layer of security or a set of front gates that you can lock, as well as your front door.

It all depends on the type of neighbourhood that you live in, this might be more fitting if for example you lived in a built up city area compared to a quiet rural village where you know everyone. Nevertheless, you should still invest in sufficient door locks and ensure that all the adult members of the household have a set of keys to hand.

There is bound to be an occasion where someone in the family ends up misplacing their keys, however when this happens you can always use a locksmith service to be able to retrieve your keys or just gain access to your home again. It will be a lot less stressful than waiting for hours on end for the police to arrive on scene.

Try Not To Leave Your Expensive Car on Display

You might have a lovely car that you want to be able to show off, but it can be very inviting for a burglar to be attracted to a home which has an expensive shiny car sitting on the drive. If you have a garage try to keep it there, or if that isn't possible perhaps you could buy a cover for the car so that it is a bit more hidden from prying eyes. An expensive car could be an indication that there are other expensive, luxurious possessions in the house as well to be interested in.

Overall if you can be organised and try to ensure that you put in place as many obstacles as possible to make it difficult for a thief to try and break in, then it will make you feel more at ease knowing that you and your family would be protected as much as possible from an intruder. After all, your home should be one of the safest places in the world to be, so make sure that yours is.
