Why You Should Assign Chores to Your Children

The problem with always treating your children like royalty is that they can become spoiled brats. Assigning them chores makes them responsible, organized, caring and sensitive to others. Of course, when you're tired or overwhelmed, an extra pair of little hands comes in handy.

According to a comprehensive study by Dr. Marty Rossman, young children who participated in household chores were more likely to achieve academic and early career success later in life.

Children who began doing chores at ages three or four showed the best outcomes. In contrast, children who started chores at 15 or 16 did not demonstrate the same success level as when they started young.

The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry suggests the appropriate chores to give to children based on their age:

    • Aged 2-3: Stowing away toys and groceries, dressing themselves with guidance.
    • Aged 4-5: Helping feed pets, making their beds (don't expect too much), clearing the dinner table.
    • Aged 6-7: Cleaning tables and countertops, storing laundry, basic sweeping.
    • Aged 7-9: Filling and emptying the dishwasher, aiding in meal preparation and assembling school lunches.
    • Aged 10-11: Changing bed linens, sanitizing kitchen or bathrooms, managing outdoor chores.
    • Aged 12 and up: Car washing, assisting with younger siblings.
    • Teens: Grocery shopping and errand running.

Starting with simple and easy tasks, such as wiping the table, taking dishes to the sink, and making up beds, is the most effective way for children to do chores. Create a sticker system and provide positive reinforcement to encourage kids to remain consistent with their tasks.

Here are four benefits kids get from doing chores.

Children Learn the Value of a Clean Home

Instilling the value of a clean home in your children has long-lasting benefits. As they participate in chores, they gain a deep-rooted understanding of why cleanliness matters. This appreciation for a well-kept living space will carry into their adult lives, shaping them into responsible individuals who care for their surroundings.

An added benefit of regular household chores is the prevention of pest issues. When children take part in chores like cleaning up food spills immediately or taking out the trash regularly, it minimizes the likelihood of attracting pests. It's a practical lesson in how maintaining cleanliness is not just about visual appeal but also about ensuring a healthy living environment.

If your home is facing major pest issues such as roach infestations, it's best to call cockroach removal experts to safely and effectively eliminate all pests.

They Pick Up Important Life Skills

Incorporating chores into your children's routine is more than cleanliness-it's about setting them up for success.

Chores such as grocery shopping and budgeting can give them insight into the value of money.

Each task they perform, no matter how small, teaches skills like reliability, accountability, and resourcefulness. These life lessons are foundational blocks for their professional and personal future.

Kids Develop Work Ethics and Self-Esteem

Giving your children positive reinforcement when they finish the chores provides them with a sense of accomplishment. They realize the importance of doing a good job, no matter how simple the task. This helps build their self-esteem and work ethics.

They Learn to Work as a Team

Assigning chores is an excellent way to teach kids the significance of teamwork. Activities like setting the table and cleaning the yard allow kids to collaborate and solve problems together. Whether deciding who does what or figuring out the quickest way to complete a task, chores introduce children to the complexities and rewards of working as a team.

Teamwork learned through chores isn't limited to sibling interactions. When children see themselves as contributing members of the family unit, it fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility.

    Final Thoughts

The home is the children's first school. Assigning them chores is teaching them how to be good grown-ups someday. Learning life skills, teamwork, and the value of cleanliness and developing work ethics and self-esteem are indispensable. They are helpful especially when staying in dormitories in their college and when they join the workforce as adults.
