When it comes to redecorating your home, it can be very easy to simply pay someone to come in and do certain tasks around your home, especially for the DIY and interior design novices among us. But have some faith in yourself, a lot of DIY is actually quite simple and can easily be done by yourself if you have the right tools, you don’t need to know all the ins and outs, that’s what How To videos on YouTube exist for! So, to save you from hiring a handy man or a contractor to come to your house and do DIY, I’ve gathered some tasks that are simple enough for almost anyone to do themselves, which should hopefully save you some money when you next redecorate your home! Here's 3 tasks you don't need to hire a professional for.
Painting Walls
Painting walls in your home is a simple affair, but lots of us still choose to pay money for someone else to come into our homes and paint the walls for us. If you don’t have the time to paint yourself, that’s perfectly fine, but if you’re only hiring someone because you’re not confident in your abilities, you can save a pretty penny by doing it yourself.
If you don’t have painting tools, you can get them in any good hardware store and wherever you buy paint from should also sell painting implements like roller brushes. Once you’re ready to go, lay a sheet on the floor and just paint your walls, if you’re not sure on technique, just find a quick YouTube guide on it and copy the technique!
Hanging Shelves
Another easy task I often see people hire a handyman for is putting up shelves, which is just a waste of money, as most shelving units are designed by manufacturers to be simple to install, especially if you got them at a big box shop like IKEA!
To hang a shelf up, you’ll just need a shelf and a drill, most of the time all the screws you’ll need come with the shelf when you buy it. So just follow along the included instructions and you’ll have your shelves hung in no time without having to pay someone to help you!
Fitting Blinds
This is another task, that is relatively easy, but people with low-DIY confidence will pay someone to do. I’ve seen blinds installers charge £200 to fit blinds when it’s only a 10 minute job, so fitting blinds yourself can save you a lot of money.
If you order blinds from an online retailer like DotcomBlinds, your blinds will be easy to install and come with all the screws etc you’ll need. Again this is a case of following along the instructions provided in the packaging and hanging blinds, even the biggest DIY-phobe should be able to hang a blind in less than 10 minutes!
So there are 3 really simple DIY tasks, I often see people paying a contractor for when they could do it themselves, while DIY is a great way to save money, be aware that sometimes it is best to pay for an expert for matters that involve plumbing and electricity, for your own safety!
