Your kitchen is undeniably a much-used and integral part of your home. You don't just use your kitchen to prepare meals and do your laundry; it's also a place where members of your family often congregate and even dine if you've got a dining table there too.

Like other rooms in your home, your kitchen can end up looking dated and in need of a refresh. You're likely thinking of a new kitchen transformation, but you've probably got some great ideas in mind.

But, if you've never been involved in a refurbishment project before, there are some common kitchen makeover mistakes you need to avoid. Here are the top five of them you need to know:

    1. Not Storing Things Away During The Work

When you get involved with a significant project like a kitchen renovation, you first need to remove all non-essential items. The trouble is, lots of folks make the mistake of working around everything in their kitchens.

As you can imagine, it makes the whole process slower, frustrating, and sometimes it can even cost more money.

If you've got space in your home, such as a spare room, it's worth storing your non-essential kitchen items in there. Otherwise, you could hire a self storage unit temporarily until all the work is complete.

    2. Not Making Good Use Of The Available Space

Did you know that even the smallest of kitchens can offer plenty of storage and other helpful space? However, the only way to make use of that space is with proper kitchen design and planning.

You may not know it, but there are plenty of space-saving concepts you can incorporate in any kitchen. For example, you could have corner cabinets that have slide-out trays and racks.

Another idea might be to convert a little-used part of your kitchen into a horizontal cooker and microwave station.

    3. Not Leaving Enough Aisle Space

Sticking with the subject of space, another consideration some homeowners forget to make is leaving enough aisle space for people to walk past each other comfortably.

The last thing you want is to have a kitchen aisle that is so tight that people need to "slide" past each other! Make sure you plan plenty of space in your new kitchen design and layout.

    4. Planning The Wrong Style

A galley style is perfect in smaller kitchens because it means people can move around in a central aisle while everything gets laid out around them. However, large kitchen spaces can benefit from an island design.

Make sure you consider the right style for your kitchen; for example, don't have an island style if there's barely enough room to stand in the middle!

    5. Not Getting Several Quotes

Lastly, you shouldn't choose the first kitchen provider that gives you a quote for your makeover. It always makes sense to get quotes from several companies before making a decision.

Doing so lets you review the different offers and take the time to research each provider's credentials, reviews, and professional accreditations.
