5 things you can’t miss when visiting Morocco

Morocco. A paradise for all the senses, this country in north Africa has something for every traveler, and every interest and offers plenty of once-in-a-lifetime experiences that you won't find elsewhere.

A hop, skip and jump from Europe, it's incredible how different it is from its Mediterranean neighbors, having carved out an ancient culture that still shines through today. Here are just a few things that will tickle your fancy when you head to this dazzling country.

    Agafay Desert

Just 30 minutes outside of Marrakech, the Agafay Desert is easily accessible and is a must-do whenever you're in Morocco. Rolling hills of sand and huge open skies mark this out as one of the most unforgettable experiences. And with the option to stay there overnight in their specially designed, luxury camps, you can experience the desert around the clock.

    Atlas Mountains

A haven for adventure seekers, the Atlas Mountains offers everyone a beautiful challenge. Jebel Toubkal towers above the whole range. Reaching an impressive 4,167 meters, it is the highest mountain in north Africa and can be completed in two days. The Toubkal Circuit is another popular choice and lasts an entire week, taking hikers around the national park and eventually up Jebel Toubkal.

And if you don't fancy hiking, hit the mountains on two wheels on a cycling tour or take it easy by visiting the Ouzoud Waterfall or any of the park's ancient villages.

    Medina in Fes

Marrakesh is a top shopping destination for many, but the artisan capital has to be Fes. Home to one of the largest tanneries in the world, the stalls sell everything from traditional copperware, to carpentry and leatherware.

Whilst shopping you'll notice the high walls and maze-like structures that give Fes its distinct character. The high-walled medina, called Fes el-Bali, is a historical monument going back to the Idrisid dynasty between 789 and 808 AD. The history is palpable in these cobbled streets.

    Experience a Hammam

For anyone who has relaxation firmly on the agenda, a trip to a hammam is a no-brainer. These traditional baths offer guests separate areas in which to soak and steam before spa-professionals scrub you down with local rhassoul clay.

You'll find the most authentic hammams in the medinas of Fes or Marrakesh. Domed ceilings and intricate tiling give them a feeling of grandeur that only make the spa experience even better.

    Camel tour

It's one of the most iconic images of Morocco. The Erg Chigaga desert offers riders 40km of uninterrupted time to connect with their camel and soak in the incredible landscape without all the tourists. If you absolutely love it, there are multi-day camel treks in M'Hamid that will give you enough time to enjoy more desert vistas and take in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
