A Home for Spark the Dragon – A Review

    Jun 3, 2025 by Ali · Leave a Comment

Disclosure - we were gifted a copy of this book and have been paid for our time in producing this review. All opinions are honest and our own.

As a mum, I'm always looking for picture books that do more than just fill a bedtime slot - ones that help my children see the world in new ways, ask questions, and grow in empathy. A Home for Spark the Dragon ticks every single box.

Illustrated book cover featuring Spark the Dragon, a red dragon at the door of a treehouse, with the title "A Home for Spark the Dragon" and authors Michael Sheen and Jess Webb. Discover why this charming story earns rave review after review!.

This heartwarming new picture book is written by acclaimed actor and activist Michael Sheen with Jess Webb, and illustrated by the incredibly talented Sarah Massini. From the very first page, it swept us all into Spark's world.

The story follows Spark, a gentle dragon whose home is torn apart by a storm. With his cosy nest in tatters, he sets out on a journey to find somewhere safe and welcoming to live. Along the way, Spark meets many kind and colourful creatures, each offering him something - but will he ever find a true place to call home?

Illustration of Spark the Dragon, a red dragon holding a small figure and surrounded by plants, with partial story text and book review visible on the right side of the page.

It's a powerful yet age-appropriate way to introduce children to the theme of homelessness, and the broader idea of what "home" really means. My kids were captivated - asking questions about where people live, why someone might not have a home, and how we can help. It was a beautiful moment of learning wrapped in the comfort of a shared story. It highlighted to my children that there are many reasons for someone being homeless, and often that it is not their fault that they find themselves in this situation.

And can we talk about the illustrations? Sarah Massini's work is utterly stunning. Each page is like a piece of art - filled with gorgeous, detailed watercolours. The characters are full of warmth and emotion, and every page is rich with little visual surprises that my children loved spotting.

The hardback cover is something special too, with shimmering gold detailing that makes it feel truly magical - like a treasure in our bedtime book basket.

Illustrated book cover showing a red dragon opening a white door near a house, with leaves, a window, and the title "the DRAGON" visible—perfect for any children's book review or Spark the Dragon review.

But what makes this book even more meaningful is what it's doing beyond the page:

Publishing in association with homelessness charity Shelter, the publisher and the author Michael Sheen are proud to give £1 from the sale of each hardback copy and 50p from the sale of each paperback copy of the book in the UK and Ireland to Shelter. Shelter is a charity whose mission is to help support children and families affected by the UK's housing emergency.

I absolutely love that this isn't just a book with a message - it's actively making a difference. By buying A Home for Spark the Dragon, you're supporting an amazing cause, while also helping your children understand it in a gentle, heartfelt way.

If you're looking for a meaningful gift, a beautifully illustrated bedtime story, or just a new favourite book to enjoy together, this is it. It's one of those stories that sticks with you - and I think that's exactly what the world needs more of.
