Everything You Need to be a Running Mum

    Sep 30, 2021 by Ali · Leave a Comment

    Colab post

Running is so beneficial for mums. It's a fantastic way to stay fit and healthy, but it's more than that. Running and taking care of yourself can help you to set a great example for your children, and eventually become something that you do together. Running also has massive mental health benefits, boosting your confidence, helping you to burn off stress, and giving you a chance to feel more like your old self, instead of just mum. One of the best things about being a mum that runs, however, is that you'll have a fantastic excuse to spend some time alone, which is something most parents crave more than anything. If you love the idea of being one of those cool, fit and happy mums you see running around the park but don't know how to get started, here's everything that you need.

    A Plan

We're more likely to exercise if we have a plan, both in terms of scheduling the exercise and writing it down in our diaries, and creating a training plan to help us improve, stay on track and hit our goals. A training plan can help you to make sure you get the most out of your workouts, even when they are short, and improve your confidence by giving you measurable results and obvious improvements.

If you've never run before, couch to 5k can be an excellent place to start. Even if you are back from a break, it can be a good idea. If you are a more experienced runner just looking to work it around your family, you might want to try a more adventurous training plan.

    Time

Until our kids start school (and even after that if you work around school times) it's very hard to find the time to work out. You might not be able to fit many long runs in, so make the most of the time that you do get with sprint intervals and short hill runs. Remember, little and often can be more effective than longer, less regular workouts.

    Good Shoes

When you first start running, you don't need the very best leggings or other clothes. However, you should get comfortable shoes that suit your gait, offer appropriate support, and ease your recovery.

    Ways to Avoid Injury

As a busy parent, the very last thing that you need is an injury making your life more difficult. Good shoes will help. Then, make sure you always warm-up and cool down to avoid stress on your muscles and joints. If you do sustain an injury, getting help from an orthopaedic clinic can help to reduce symptoms and get you back out there quickly and safely. One Orthopaedics is a fantastic orthopaedic clinic in the UK. They offer sports medicine to help with a range of injuries.

    Entertainment

Some people enjoy the peace of running in the open air without any distractions. Other people find that they run further and enjoy the process more if they've got music, a podcast or even an audiobook to listen to.

If you are trying to get into running as a parent, one of the best things that you can do is get into a routine. There will be times that you need to be flexible, but sticking to a routine as much as you can will make running a habit that becomes hard to break.
