Spring is coming and I for one can't wait! At the moment our garden is completely unusable and we are planning a huge project to turn it into our dream garden! I can't wait to be able to get out there and put the washing on the line, enjoy the flowers and sit down and enjoy a book in the sun. It will be really nice for the children to have somewhere to play and for us to have friends over for barbecues.
We want to lay an area to lawn with artificial grass, have flowerbeds along the sides and have paving slabs along the side of the house leading to the side door. I want a comfy seating area and of course a barbecue! A little bench for the children to eat on would be great too. I'd love a little playhouse for the children to keep them entertained and a sandpit and water table for them to play in. I'd decorate the fences and walls of the garden with outdoor fairy lights so that it looks pretty in the evening. Read on for more family garden ideas along with some links to my favourite things.
I've put together a little inspiration board of family garden ideas and all the things that I want in our new garden. Now's the time to get buying, many places like Fishpools have sales on garden items before the big summer season starts.
Spring flowers
Daffodils and Tulips are the perfect spring flowers for a children's garden, adding vibrant pops of color and whimsical charm that kids will adore. Daffodils with their sunny yellow hues and distinctive trumpet-shaped blooms are not only visually appealing, but they are also easy to grow and are often one of the first flowers to bloom in spring, creating a sense of excitement for children. Tulips, with their wide array of colors and unique shapes, offer endless possibilities for creative garden designs.
Children will love planting these bulbs in the fall and eagerly anticipating their arrival in spring. These flowers are not only visually appealing, but they are also safe for kids to handle and interact with, making them ideal choices for a children's garden where little hands can explore and learn about nature.
With their cheerful and playful characteristics, daffodils and tulips are sure to captivate the imaginations of young gardeners and make their spring garden a joyous and memorable experience.
Add a pop of yellow
Yellow outdoor cushions are a vibrant and cheerful addition to a family-friendly garden, adding a pop of color and comfort to outdoor seating areas. The sunny hue of yellow brings warmth and joy to the garden, creating an inviting and welcoming ambiance that's perfect for spending quality time with the family.
Yellow outdoor cushions can be used on patio chairs, benches, or even on the ground for picnics and lounging. The soft and plush cushions provide a comfortable spot for relaxation, play, and bonding moments with loved ones. Their durable and weather-resistant materials make them ideal for outdoor use, ensuring they can withstand the elements and continue to brighten up the garden for seasons to come.
Whether it's for a cozy reading nook or a spot for family gatherings, yellow outdoor cushions are a delightful addition to any family-friendly garden, adding comfort, style, and a burst of sunshine to outdoor living spaces.
Children's table
A children's picnic table that converts into a sand and water table is a space-saving and versatile addition to any outdoor play area. This innovative design allows kids to enjoy multiple activities in one compact piece of furniture. During picnic time, it functions as a regular table where kids can sit, eat, and play games. When it's time for some sensory play, the table can be easily transformed into a sand and water table, providing endless hours of fun for kids to dig, scoop, pour, and explore.
The dual functionality of this table not only saves space in your outdoor area but also encourages imaginative play and promotes sensory development in children. It's a convenient and practical solution for families looking to maximize play opportunities without sacrificing space in their outdoor play area.
String lights
Solar string lights are a magical addition to a child-friendly garden, adding a touch of enchantment and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. These eco-friendly lights are powered by the sun, making them a safe and energy-efficient lighting option for children to enjoy. With their twinkling glow, solar string lights can transform a garden into a magical wonderland, perfect for evening play or outdoor gatherings.
Children will be captivated by the mesmerizing lights, which can be hung on trees, shrubs, or around play areas, adding a touch of whimsy and sparking their imagination. Solar string lights are also easy to install and require no electrical wiring, making them a safe and hassle-free option for creating an inviting and magical outdoor space that kids will love to explore and play in.
Wooden playhouse
A wooden playhouse is a perfect addition to a child-friendly garden, providing a shaded and imaginative space for children to play and explore. With its natural charm and rustic appeal, a wooden playhouse can become a cozy retreat where kids can let their imagination soar. It offers a sheltered spot for children to play, protected from the sun's rays, making it a safe and comfortable play area during hot summer days. The playhouse can serve as a base for endless imaginative adventures, from playing house to setting up a secret hideout or a pirate ship.
Children can personalize their playhouse with their own decorations and make-believe props, fostering creativity and imaginative play. A wooden playhouse can also become a hub for social interaction, where kids can gather, play together, and create lasting memories. With its natural beauty and versatility, a wooden playhouse is a wonderful addition to a child-friendly garden, providing a shaded sanctuary for play and sparking endless opportunities for imaginative adventures.
A Barbecue
A barbecue might not be the first thing you think of when creating a family friendly garden but for me the spring and summer is all about entertaining, eating outside and having fun. This stainless steel barbecue has a lid to keep small hands safe and looks good too.
A Day Bed
This Rattan Day Bed from Fishpools £999 (sale price) is perfect for lounging in the sun - if the children let you!
