Charades is always a favourite in our house because everyone can get involved, and the Halloween version makes it even more fun. You don't need lots of equipment or complicated instructions either, which makes this a really easy activity to have ready for a Halloween party.
What Is Halloween Charades?
Halloween charades is the classic game of charades with a spooky twist.
One person chooses a card and has to act out the Halloween-themed word or phrase without speaking. Everyone else tries to guess the correct answer before the timer runs out.
You might find yourself pretending to be a witch flying on a broomstick, a zombie walking through a graveyard or someone carving a pumpkin.
It's silly, active and usually gets everyone laughing!
One of the best things about Halloween charades is that it works with lots of different age groups. You can make the game easier for younger children or introduce more difficult Halloween words and phrases for teenagers and adults.
Free Printable Halloween Charades Cards
I've created a set of Halloween charades game cards that you can download and print at home.
The printable is designed to make setting up the game as quick and easy as possible.
All you need to do is:
- Download the printable Halloween charades game PDF using the link below.
- Print the sheets onto A4 paper or cardstock.
- Cut out the individual cards.
- Place the cards face down in a bowl, bag or Halloween bucket.
- Gather everyone together and start playing.
If you're organising a Halloween party, you can prepare the cards beforehand and simply bring them out when you're ready for a game.
What You Need
You really don't need much to play:
- Printable Halloween charades cards
- Printer
- A4 paper or white cardstock
- Scissors or a paper trimmer
- Bowl, bag or Halloween bucket
- Phone or timer
- Pen and paper for keeping score
I prefer printing game cards onto approximately 200-250gsm cardstock because they are much sturdier than ordinary printer paper.
If you want to use your Halloween charades cards year after year, laminate them before cutting them out.
How To Play Halloween Charades
There are several ways you can play, but these simple Halloween charades rules work really well for families and parties.
1. Divide everyone into teams
Split the players into two teams. Try to make the teams roughly equal, particularly if you're playing with a mixture of children and adults.
2. Shuffle the cards
Put all the Halloween charades cards into a bowl or bag so nobody can see the clues.
3. Choose the first player
The first person takes a card without showing anyone else.
4. Start the timer
Give each player around 60 seconds to act out their word or phrase.
They aren't allowed to say the word, spell it out or make obvious sounds associated with it.
5. Start guessing
The player's team calls out guesses while they continue acting.
If somebody guesses correctly before the timer runs out, the team earns one point.
6. Take turns
The other team then chooses someone to act out the next card.
Keep alternating between teams until you've used all the cards or reached the number of rounds you've agreed to play.
The team with the most points wins.
How Long Should Each Charades Turn Last?
Around 60 seconds is a good starting point.
For younger children, try giving them 60-90 seconds so they don't feel rushed.
For older children, teenagers and adults, reducing the time limit to 30 or 45 seconds makes the game much more challenging.
If you're playing with a big group, shorter turns can also help to keep the game moving.
Halloween Charades For Younger Children
Charades can be tricky for very young children, particularly if they aren't confident readers yet.
If you're playing with younger kids, pick out some of the easiest cards beforehand.
Simple Halloween ideas include:

You can also read their card quietly to them rather than expecting them to read it themselves.

For older players, you can make Halloween charades much harder.
Try including actions, characters and longer phrases rather than single words.
You could also introduce Halloween films and TV shows with a spooky vibe.
Another easy way to increase the difficulty is to reduce each turn to 30 seconds.

Different Ways To Play Halloween Charades
Once everyone knows how to play, there are lots of ways to change the game.
Halloween Minute
Give each player exactly one minute and see how many Halloween charades cards their team can guess.
As soon as one clue is guessed correctly, pick up another card and continue until the timer sounds.
Team Steal
If a team doesn't guess the answer before the timer runs out, give the opposing team one chance to steal the point.
Kids Vs Adults
This can be really funny at a family Halloween party. Put the children on one team and adults on another and see who wins.

Everyone Plays
Don't want teams?
One person acts while everyone else guesses. Whoever guesses correctly becomes the next person to act.
This works particularly well with smaller groups.
Halloween Charades Tournament
If you're entertaining a larger group, divide everyone into several small teams.
Teams can play against each other with the winners progressing to a final round.
Speed Charades
Reduce the timer to just 20 or 30 seconds.
This is much harder than it sounds and works particularly well with teenagers and adults.
Using Halloween Charades At A Kids' Party
This is a really useful game to have ready at a Halloween party because you can bring it out whenever you need to fill 15 or 20 minutes.
It also requires very little space or equipment.
For a children's party, I would keep each round fairly short. You could give everyone one or two turns rather than continuing until every card has been used.
Small prizes aren't necessary, but you could give the winning team Halloween stickers, pencils or another inexpensive treat.
Halloween Charades For The Classroom
These printable Halloween charades cards can also make a fun classroom Halloween activity.
Divide the class into teams and choose one child from each team to act at a time.
For younger children, you could concentrate on simple Halloween vocabulary such as witch, pumpkin, bat and ghost.
Charades also encourages children to communicate without words, use their imagination and think creatively about how they can represent an object or action.
For a large class, divide children into smaller groups and give each group a selection of cards.
Halloween Charades For Youth Groups
Halloween charades is also an easy activity for Scouts, Guides, church youth groups and other children's groups because you don't need to buy a special game.
Print and laminate a set of cards and you'll have them ready to use again next Halloween.
With older children and teenagers, try adding more difficult clues or introducing a 30-second speed round.
Tips For A Successful Game
A few simple things can make the game run much more smoothly.
Choose someone to keep score and control the timer so there aren't arguments about whether an answer was given in time.
Make sure everyone gets a turn at acting. Quieter children may not want to go first, so give them time to see how the game works before encouraging them to join in.
Agree the rules before you begin. For example, decide whether players can point to objects, indicate how many words are in the answer or use traditional charades gestures.
Most importantly, don't take the scoring too seriously. The funniest part of charades is usually watching everyone trying to work out what on earth somebody is pretending to be!
Make Your Halloween Charades Cards Last Longer
If you think you'll use these cards again, laminate them.
Print the cards onto cardstock, laminate the whole sheet and then cut out each individual card.
Store them in an envelope, reusable zip bag or small box with your Halloween decorations. When October comes around next year, your game will already be prepared.
Useful Supplies For Printing Your Halloween Game
If you regularly print children's activities and free printables at home, a few basic supplies are useful to have around:
- A4 white cardstock
- A paper trimmer
- A laminator
- A4 laminating pouches
- Small storage envelopes or reusable bags
These aren't essential - ordinary printer paper and scissors will work perfectly well - but cardstock and laminating are worthwhile if you're planning to reuse the game.

What age is Halloween charades suitable for?
Halloween charades can be adapted for almost any age. For younger children, choose simple words such as ghost, witch and pumpkin and give them a little longer to act. Older children and adults can use more difficult phrases and shorter time limits.
How many people do you need to play charades?
You can play with a small family group or a large party. Four or more people works particularly well if you want to divide everyone into teams, although you can easily play a non-team version with fewer people.
How many cards should we use?
Around 20-30 cards is plenty for a quick game. Use more if you're entertaining a larger group or want the game to last longer.
How long should each charades turn be?
Between 30 and 60 seconds works well. I recommend starting with 60 seconds and adjusting the time depending on the ages of your players.
Can you talk during charades?
Traditionally, no. The person acting shouldn't speak, spell the answer or make sound effects. However, when you're playing with young children there's no harm in relaxing the rules if it makes the game more enjoyable.
