Having a Summer Baby? Here's How You Can Prepare!

Prepare for a summer baby with these top tips...

Is your baby due in the summer of this year? If so, you've probably recently announced the news after your twelve week scan, and are now getting your head around the idea that your new arrival will be here in time for the sunshine in 2020. Having a baby in any season can be challenging, but there are particular concerns at extreme temperatures such as summer and winter. Babies aren't able to regulate their body heat well, and so being too warm or cool can actually be really dangerous for them. While here in the UK our weather is relatively mild compared with elsewhere, there are a few things you'll want to bear in mind. Here's what you need to know about having a summer baby!

Get the temperature right at home

For the most part, using stand fans and ceiling fans can help keep the home cool enough over the summer. However, if we have a heatwave (like we did in 2018) you might be concerned that your house gets far too hot for a newborn baby. If you own your property and are looking to invest, having an air conditioning system installed could be one of the best purchases you'll ever make. Not just for your newborn but for keeping your family in general comfortable! Have it fitted by a professional, that way it will stand the test of time and you wont need to rely on emergency ac repair companies to get you up and running again all the time. Put a thermometer on the wall in your home, keep track of the temperature and ensure it stays within safe range for the baby.

    Find the right pram/ accessories

Getting out into the sunshine with your new baby is one of the best things about them being born in summer. You'll be more motivated to get out and about and out of the house, which is good for you as you get some exercise- and good for them as well. However, you'll need to make sure your pram is up to the job of keeping baby protected. Find a model which offers a good canopy hood to keep them shaded, ideally one which has a sun protection layer built in.

    Buy summer baby clothes

Buying baby clothes is so exciting, and what could be better than dressing up your summer baby in cute outfits? Just make sure that they're as practical as they are adorable, they should be breathable, comfortable and lightweight. Any big retailer selling baby clothes will be suitable, just be aware if you're buying clothes online- especially from overseas. They might be made of unsuitable materials that arent breathable and can cause your baby to overheat. Always apply a newborn safe SPF as well as keeping them shaded, babies skin is so sensitive that they can easily burn even if it's not that hot or sunny.
