With international tourism resuming after a massive slow down due to pandemic, many people are going back to their postponed travelling plans.

Moreover, numerous young adults are now able to fully work remotely, creating new opportunities for moving to another location during anytime of the year.

An internet connected computer is all they need to accomplish their job-related tasks, so they find no obstacles to travel around the world whenever they can afford to do it.

“Digital nomad” is a term that, even though it is certainly not new, we are hearing it a lot these days due to the growing trend of people who choose to work remotely and have a more nomadic way of life, settling in different parts of the world for short periods of time.

As a consequence, cities like Barcelona are experimenting rises in their international arrivals. Barcelona has always been a touristic destination and for some time it has been among the ten most visited places in the world.

There are countless reasons to why people choose Barcelona as a destination. Its cultural environment and architecture, its amazing night life, the beaches and the mountain, its always sunny weather and countless gastronomic attractions make the Catalonian capital a top destination not only for short term travelers, but also for those who are looking to stay for a longer period in the city.

In fact, many people choose to learn Spanish in Barcelona through courses especially designed for foreign staying in the city. Language tourism is on the rise, since learning the local language is a perfect complement for a living abroad experience. Schools such as Expanish offer many courses that can easily adapt to any traveler needs and expectations on the development of Spanish skills.

Costs of living in Barcelona in 2022

One of the things that travelers must take into consideration before choosing a destintation is whether it is an expensive or affordable one.

Regarding Barcelona, it can be stated that it is not particularly expensive when compared with other European capitals, but it is definitely more expensive than other Spanish destinations.

With that being said, it is completely possible to travel to Barcelona on a budget. It is only a matter of choosing the right quarter to settle down, which shops it is more convenient to buy in and which venues are at your reach.

One thing that is quite interesting in Barcelona is that staying close to the sea it doesn’t mean you will pay a higher rent. On the contrary, quarters such as Ciutat Vella, which is the heart of the city, is completely affordable.

Other quarters that offer affordable accommodation are Barceloneta and Raval. Both have a vibrant night life, with tourist strolling on the streets all the time, so if you are looking for that kind of landscape, do not hesitate to choose these areas.

A single-bedroom apartment in Barceloneta or Raval can be found from $700 a month, but renting just a room in a shared apartment is completely possible at $30 a night. Eating in Raval is also quite cheap, you can find a full menu for $12 and a can of beer can cost $1.30.

For travelers who do not have to worry for finding affordable options, quarters like Zona Alta and Sarrià are the best options. Over there, there are many luxury apartments and big houses, surrounded by calm parks and green-filled streets.

A single bedroom apartment can be found at $1000, while transportation costs must be considered, given that there are no restaurants or bars near these quarters. Anyway, public transportation is excellent and can be used at a relatively low price. For $90 you can buy a 30 days all transports travel card that covers Barcelona and its suburbs.

Also, the outside area of Barcelona is also an incredible option for travelers who are looking for spacious accommodation and quiet environment. Castelldefels, Sitges and San Cugat are the main options for those type of interests.

    Barcelona current COVID-19 restrictions

Although, pandemic information gets constantly updated, at the present time, all COVID-19 related-restrictions were lifted, which means that all places are open to public without any limits to their maximum capacity. Also, COVID certificates are no longer required.

Wearing masks is still mandatory on public transport, planes, taxis and trains, as well as in hospitals, pharmacies and elderly residencies.

Using a mask is, though, recommended, indoors.

Regarding vaccination, everyone over 5 years old can freely access a COVID-19 vaccine and the region has a very high rate of vaccination, which means it is safe to travel to Barcelona, since pandemic is pretty much under control.

Is currently safe to live in Barcelona?

Barcelona is like most of urban areas in the first world. It is mostly a safe place, but there are some safety measures needed, because, even though there are not violent robberies, pickpockets do exist.

Thus, if you are strolling in a crowded street, be aware of your bag and pockets and keep your electronic devices, such as cameras, tablets and mobile phones, safe. Furthermore, avoiding using expensive watches and jewelry is the best way of avoiding being targeted by criminals.

Also, avoid deserted areas and if you seat on a street on an outside table at a restaurant or a bar, keep your bag within your reach and avoid leaving your mobile phone on the table.

When using ATM machines to withdraw money, do not show your pin code and, before you leave, put your money in a safe place and be aware of the surroundings, specially at nights.

More security measures may be needed for women traveling solo, such as avoiding desert or dark areas at night if walking alone.

In conclusion, Barcelona is one of the most exciting cities in the world. Whether you are travelling for a short term or you are planning to stay longer while working remotely, it is a great place to immerse into local life style and improve your Spanish skills while enjoying its many attractions and great sunny weather.
