How To Add Appeal To The Exterior Of Your Home

When updating your home, you might want to move your focus to the exterior because this is the first thing your guests will see as they approach your property. You can certainly add appeal in a variety of ways, and this guide will hopefully provide you with some inspiration.

    Replace Windows & Doors

Over time, windows and doors can wear down due to daily usage and having to protect the home from the various weather conditions we get across the year. You want a front door that pops with color, and that looks inviting, so start with a new door or update your current one. Pick a color that will match the rest of the exterior and make sure you have the number or name of your property on the door or beside it. Don't be afraid to bright with the color to make your door pop from its place.

When it comes to your windows, you'll likely have single or double glazed. Single glazed is the worst you can have when it comes to insulating your home. You want double or even triple glazed windows in order to save on your energy bills. You may also want to think about a different style of window, perhaps the windows you have now don't let in a huge amount of light. So have a look at Philadelphia Window to see what's available and what's popular. Floor to ceiling windows is great for maximizing natural light in your home.

    Pay Attention To Your Garden

Your front and back gardens will require some regular attention, depending on how much or how little greenery you incorporate into it. If you have plenty of front lawn space, maybe think about digging two sections going along the front of your property and adding in a lot of different colored flowers. Fencing is also a good idea around the back of the property to keep that area private. For a more refined finish, bespoke iron fencing is a great alternative to standard panels - durable, elegant, and instantly elevating to any property boundary. Here are some other ways to improve your outdoor space:

Add Garden Furniture - Garden furniture is a great way of adding appeal, especially when it comes to spending time out in the garden. There are now seated sofas that are completely waterproof and look great as a socializing space for you and your guests. Garden furniture now goes further than just your standard wooden bench. You might want to install a swing under a particularly shaded area or have some sun loungers in the areas where your garden catches the most light.

Mow Your Lawn Regularly - The first thing that can make a property look unkept is the lawn. It may be a pain to do but the more you mow your lawn on a regular basis, the easier it will be to maintain, and it will make a huge difference in the overall appearance.

Install A Pond Or Water Feature - Having a water feature or pond in your outdoor space is going to add a little more luxury to the garden and it also adds that element of calm and tranquil feeling. Water features are fairly easy to install as well as ponds, but you may want to hire in a professional if you're not 100% confident in your abilities. For aeration and maintenance, consider a trusted brand offering various models to keep your pond clean and healthy year-round.

Add A Bird Feeder To Encourage Wildlife - If you want more wildlife in your garden than adding in a bird feeder is a great way to attract a variety of bird, and if you have a birdhouse or a considerable amount of trees or bushes, they may even nest there. Squirrels tend to take advantage of bird feed so if you want to deter them from eating them, make sure you get smaller bird feeders with tiny holes that only a bird can access.

Incorporate Levels - Levels can really make a huge difference in the appearance of your outdoor space. Instead of it just being flat, having raised areas or incorporating decking or a pond can give your space different levels.

Fix Decking - Decking can be attached to the property or in some area of the garden. You want to make sure you know what size decking you need and what it's going to be used for. Attaching it to your property is good for extending the size of it and having it in a certain place in the garden to move your focus over to that area when you look at the garden.

    Makeover Your Mailbox

The humble mailbox is something that tends to often be ignored and therefore over time, it can end up becoming very worn and tired looking. So it's important that every part of the property, even the mailbox is given its own makeover. Try to give it a lick of paint every so often and get a formula that's going to be waterproof and weatherproof in general. You could give it a quirky design and make it unique to your property so that whenever anyone comes around, the first thing they recognize is the mailbox.

    Repair Any Broken Roofing

When it comes to your roofing, it's highly unlikely that all of it can be seen, but it depends on the height of your property and the way it sits. When you see broken roofing, it can affect the appearance of a property, but it's also a sign that your home is vulnerable. Once something like your roof, has holes or gaps in, you risk getting water damage or an infestation in your home. So it's important that you avert your attention upwards every now and again just to check if there's anything you can see that could be a problem. You should get a roof check every year, just to make sure there's nothing out of sight that's an issue.

    Power Wash Your Walls

Never underestimate the power of a power washer. These pack a mighty punch, and you'll have probably seen them being used on garden tiles and brick walls to get rid of a build-up of grime and dirt. It's one of those things that you wouldn't notice at first, but once you get that power wash on your walls, you'll see a huge difference when it's washed down. You should do this perhaps once a year, and you want to make sure that before you start, any cracks or visible gaps in the walls are filled in. A power wash is very powerful (hence the name), so you don't want to be blasting water into exposed brickwork and affecting the internal structure of your property.

Design A Clear Path To Your Door

Having a clear path to your front door makes it seem more put together, and it guides your guests to approach the property the right way instead of potentially ruining your garden space by stepping repeatedly on the grass. You can usually highlight the path using tiles that go from the pavement right up to your front door. You could also use visual cues through your plants or outdoor lighting.

    Clean Your Windows

Windows can easily get dirty and even though you're cleaning them on the inside, a lot of the dirt is coming from the outdoors. Whether you do it yourself or get in a professional, make sure your windows get cleaned every month. Make sure to clean both the window pane and any framing or ledges around your window pane. It's fairly cheap to get your windows cleaned nowadays, so there's no excuse!

    Stain The Garage Door

A garage door can lose it's color quite easily, and they can be pretty expensive to replace, so instead, you may want to stain it. You can do this by power washing it down to make sure the surface is clean and that you're working with a blank canvas. For staining your garage door you need a gel stain and a cheap synthetic brush to apply the stain onto the door. The gel will dry very quickly so it's best to do this on an overcast day where the garage door isn't within view of direct sunlight. You can get a range of colors, and it can give a variety of appearances depending on the style or design of your garage door.

    Keep Any Vehicles Clean

You could have a pristine looking exterior, but if you own a car or motorbike and that's covered in bird poo and mud, then it can really bring down the attraction of your home. If you don't always have the time to clean your vehicle, you can store inside the garage and out of view or you can take it down your local garage, or petrol station to get it cleaned. It can be a hassle to do but it makes the difference in the overall presentation of your home.

Hopefully, you'll be able to take away some of these tips with you to use on your own home, to add appeal to it's exterior. This is certainly beneficial to keep on top of!
