There are some things in our house that just feel like an event before they have even started, and the big summer of football is definitely one of them. The boys are already talking about kits, scores, favourite players and countries and who they think is going to win, so I knew we had to make a proper occasion of it at home.
I love any excuse for a themed set-up, and honestly, a football watch party is such an easy one to pull together. You do not need to go over the top or spend days planning. A few decorations, plenty of snacks, a good screen, some music before kick-off and a relaxed "help yourself" table is more than enough to make it feel special.
Very kindly helped us get ready for our own summer of sport at home, and I thought I would share a few easy ideas if you are planning on hosting family or friends for a match day too.

Set the scene with simple football decorations
I started with the decorations because that is always the bit that my children love to get involved with. We used football balloons, flag bunting and gold letter balloons to create a proper football party atmosphere in the front room. The boys loved looking at the different flags and working out which country each one belonged to. They also helped to blow up the balloons and hang up the lettering - funny how they are willing to help out when it is something that they are interested in!
With parties at home, I always like it to look 'put together' but also relaxed, especially if there will be children there. I want everything to be easily accessible and look inviting. I am however not about spending hours making everything perfect, especially when children are involved and snacks are usually being eaten before I have even finished laying them out.
The football balloons were such a simple touch but made the room feel instantly more fun. We added flags in the window too, which the boys loved, and it made the whole thing feel bright and summery. The flags in the window and some football themed balloons tied to the front door also ensures that any guests who haven't been to our house before know where the party is!

Make the viewing area the main event
For a football watch party, the screen is obviously the star of the show. Having a decent viewing set-up makes such a difference, especially if you have friends or family over and everyone is trying to see the action.
Very has a great range of Smart TVs, which are ideal if you want to refresh your home set-up in time for the summer of sport. I love the idea of making the living room feel like the best seat in the house, with everyone gathered round, snacks on the table and no one having to balance a plate on their knees while squinting at a tiny screen. The picture on this HiSense TV is incredible and it is a decent size so the football activity on screen is really easy to see and a pleasure to watch (as long as your team is winning!)
We set up the table in front of the TV so the boys and their friends could sit comfortably and help themselves to food while watching. It felt relaxed, cosy and fun, which is exactly the kind of hosting I like.

Create an easy snack table
Food is always the most important part of any gathering in our house. I went for a mix of simple picky bits because they always work best with children, and they are so much easier than trying to serve a proper meal during a match.
We had sandwiches, crisps, fruit, carrot sticks, biscuits and cupcakes with football toppers. Nothing complicated, but it all looked really cute once it was laid out together.
My best tip is to use little bowls and platters rather than putting packets straight on the table. It instantly makes everything look more special, even if it is just crisps, grapes and watermelon. I also like having a balance of treats and fresher snacks, especially when the children are grazing for a while.
Cupcakes are always a win too. You can keep them simple and add themed toppers, sprinkles or coloured icing. They make the table feel like a party without needing to bake anything too fancy.

Add music before kick-off
One thing that really helps create an atmosphere is music. Before the match starts, we like having some upbeat songs playing while everyone arrives, chats and gets settled. Obviously I start banging out the English football anthems like Vindaloo and It's Coming Home while dancing around the room. It's a great way to liven the atmosphere and get everyone in the mood for the game.
A good speaker is such a handy thing to have for summer hosting because you can use it inside, outside, in the kitchen, in the garden or even if you are taking the party outdoors. Very has a range of portable speakers and they are perfect for creating that pre-match buzz.

Keep it relaxed for the children
Hosting with children is always a little bit chaotic, so I try not to plan anything too rigid. For a football watch party, the best thing is to keep it simple and fun.
Have the match on, snacks within reach and enough space for the boys to sit, move around and get excited. Children do not need a perfectly styled event. They just love the feeling of something being different from a normal day.
You could also add a few easy football-themed activities for half-time, such as:
- Football bingo
- Guess the score
- Design your own football shirt
- Penalty shoot-out in the garden
- Name the flags challenge
I find little extras like this are useful if attention spans start to wander, especially with younger children.
Make it work for your home
The best thing about hosting a summer football party at home is that you can make it as big or as small as you like. You could have friends over for a full afternoon of food and drinks, or you could keep it as a cosy family night with snacks and blankets on the sofa.
If the weather is lovely, you could take the party into the garden before or after the match. Put the speaker outside, serve drinks and snacks, and let the children kick a ball around. If the weather is typically British and unpredictable, you can keep everything indoors and still make it feel like a celebration.
That is what I love about this kind of hosting. It does not need to be perfect. It just needs to feel fun.
My easy football watch party tips
- Choose a few simple decorations that make an impact, like balloons or bunting.
- Set up the TV area so everyone can see comfortably.
- Serve picky food that people can help themselves to.
- Use bowls, boards and platters to make basic snacks look special.
- Have music playing before the match starts.
- Keep activities simple if children are coming.
- Do as much as possible before guests arrive so you can enjoy it too.
I am really looking forward to more football-filled afternoons and evenings at home this summer. There is something so lovely about everyone gathering together, shouting at the TV, eating snacks and making a normal day feel like a proper occasion.
Thanks to Very, our home feels ready for all the football fever, and the boys are already asking when we can do it all again. Honestly, I do not need much persuading. Give me a snack table, a good screen, music playing and happy children, and I am in my element.
