How To Make Your Clothes Last Longer

The idea of the value of clothing is very interesting, because it might be that an item that has been designed by a brand name but uses the same basic materials as a supermarket line, could have its value skyrocketed thanks to that designer label. Yet it's also true that the valuation of clothes is not necessarily so easy to calculate yourself. For instance, spending on more expensive clothing items can help you pick up a more durable garment, rather than having to replace a cheap item time and time again. For instance, £100 shoes are likely to last longer than £15 shoes, and may not even be more expensive, considering how you may need to replace the cheaper option time and time again.

But one effort is sure to improve the value of your clothing no matter what, and that's taking the time to make them last longer and keep them in good condition. This was a skill that older generations were careful to keep hold of, but in our disposable culture, it's quite easy to forget those skills. Let's consider them again:

    Wash Them As Appropriate

We all know that washing clothes makes them last longer, and it's not as if you don't wash in the first place. Bear with us. Sure, you're likely very hygienic and care for your clothing, but not all garments require the same level of care, while others require sensitive conditions for being washed to start with. For instance, putting them on a washing machine cycle at a colder temperature could help them avoid draining colors as easily.

Furthermore, it might be that instead of only caring for the direct instructions of each garment, you focus on keeping the washing appliances you use in great condition. For instance, here are some reasons why your dryer is leaving black marks. This can help you avoid clothes getting ruined in seemingly normal and appropriate washing conditions.

    Small Alternations & Changes

You'd be surprised by how empowering learning small alterations and changes can be in caring for your own clothes. For instance, learning how to sew a hole, add a badge or button, or trim sleeves or trouser legs to be more conducive to your actual height and proportions can be a great idea. Feeling able to make those slight alterations can help you keep clothing for longer, even if your body changes shape and size over the years.

    Store Them Appropriately

Storing clothes well can make the most difference when it comes to how fresh and cared for they are. For instance, you will likely find a massive benefit in hanging jackets and shirts rather than folding them, as this keeps the creases away. But learning how to fold properly can also help, as keeping trousers folded in the right places and stored in a clean, not-too-packed drawer will help them avoid the material from being overly handled as time goes on. You can learn to fold like a retail worker here.

With this advice, we hope you can make your clothes last longer in the best possible sense.
