    Photography Tips For Bloggers

I fell in love with blogging because I love writing. But I soon realised that a big part of blogging is good photography. Without great pictures on your website and social media channels your blog is so much less than it could be. A great picture after all tells a thousand words and it is often the photos that draw people in to read a post, especially through social media channels such as Instagram or Pinterest.

I have now learnt to love photography as much as I love writing. So I thought I would share my top photography tips for bloggers to help you love and be amazing at the photography side too.

    Invest in decent equipment

If you can afford to it is well worth investing in some decent equipment. You can of course take very decent photos on a camera phone these days but nothing compares to the quality of a photo from a DSLR camera. I have a relatively cheap entry Canon camera and I bought a 50mm lens which I used for all my photos.

If you are planning food shots or flatlays you will want some interesting and complimentary backdrops. Custom backdrops are a great idea and if you get good quality ones they will last for years so are a great investment, you'll find that they meet all your illusion and imagination to photos .

Lighting is something else to consider. Depending upon what you are taking photos of, generally natural light is best so if you can move your subject to near a window that works best. You can use reasonably cheap silver reflectors to work the light to your advantage. If you have a dark home I'd recommend investing in a light - I have soft boxes and also a ring light which I bought from Amazon which were all bought for a reasonable price and have proved invaluable in the winter months or when photographing in the evening.

    Take a course on photography

One of the single best things I did was to attend a photography course. It taught me how to use my camera on manual setting and has enabled me to take some beautiful photos.  You can find online courses, get a private tutor or attend a course. I went on a weekend residential course and it was a great way at immersing myself in what we were learning. Next on my list is to take a course in photoshop so that I can learn how to edit my photos professionally.

    Take unique photos

My biggest tip would be to take unique photos. Try to see every situation through someone else's eyes - choose different angles, lighting, shade and accessories. Focus on the space within the photo rather than the subject of the photo. Travel to get the shot and don't be embarrassed about taking your time to take it. I personally love natural, casual shots rather than staged or stiff photos, I find them more realistic.

    Back up your photos

There would be nothing more heartbreaking than losing all your precious photos if your computer crashed. Make sure you have a backup plan - I back mine up on a local hard drive and also remotely in "the cloud" so that I have peace of mind that should anything go wrong my photos will be saved!
