Renovating a House and Making a Home

    Sep 14, 2015 · Modified: Sep 22, 2016 by Ali · 20 Comments

Our house is currently on the market and we are eagerly looking for a new home for our little family. We love our Victorian terrace but we have outgrown it and would like to move into a slightly better area. Obviously we have a budget for our move but with the change in area, it isn't going to buy us any more house for our money.

To make the most of what house we can buy we are going to have to buy a house that needs some work. Probably major work. Unfortunately it is the only way that we'll be able to buy a house big enough in the area that we want. I'm both excited and nervous about this because I know that with three children it will be an enormous undertaking but I'm also looking forward to the creative challenge and the chance to make a home that is really ours.

Luckily there is plenty of inspiration online to be found when looking for ideas. Pinterest is an obvious one and I have really gone to town lately building boards with all my ideas. (You can follow my Pinterest boards here). But there are also plenty of other sites which can help get your creative juices flowing for decoration ideas . Here are some examples of what my dream house will look like when it is finished.

I'd love a bathroom with a roll top bath and lovely crisp white tiles.

A baby boys room in white, red and blue would be so cute. I love the old radiator in here too which provides real character.

A gorgeous, peaceful and grown up bedroom is high up on my list of wants. I quite fancy going for the all white look although the hubby is dubious!

An open plan kitchen / diner is an absolute must. I want to be able to  cook dinner whilst supervise the kids homework and chat to them about their day. Bespoke kitchens like this would be a dream come true.

Ah well, in my dreams eh?! It might take us a while but I hope we'll get there and be able to create something similar.

This post is a PR collaboration.

Lots of great ideas! We have made the somewhat crazy decision to sell up and rent as with 5 kids we were never going to have the house we really wanted!!

Your dream house looks very similar to what mine would be. I think you will have an amazing challenge ahead of you, but just think at the end of it you can sit back and really enjoy it with a smile on your face saying you did this x

We are looking at getting out first mortgage and like you, as we are changing areas we aren't going to get any more house for our money so I have been pinning away on Pinterest for ideas. I can't wait to get stuck in and create our own home. Best of luck to you xx

There is nothing like moving house to get the creative juices flowing. The only thing I find is as soon as I move and decorate I want to do it again!

I understand your excitement but also your reservations about buying a houe that needs major work. My parents bought one in 2007 and have been renovating it ever since. The major work was done within a few years, but it beign a 1930s house it still needed lots of minor renovations. My husband and I were considering buying a house that needs lots of work, but we decided against this.

Oh my word, each one of these photos is amazing, I just love the bedroom (I think it's my fave, just!) Pinterest is great isn't it. We have just moved house however it's to rent not buy - as we are not sure where we are going to settle yet. I do really want to buy and to start making a home - our very own home.
