A king-size bed offers the ultimate sleep experience, giving you plenty of space to stretch out and relax. In addition to offering unmatched comfort, it also makes a stunning statement in the bedroom. Dressed with soft linens, fluffy pillows and a luxurious bedspread, it creates a cosy retreat that is both stylish and inviting.
The large size of a king bed, however, can feel intimidating to decorate. But with our tips, creating a balanced, stylish and inviting bedding setup shouldn't be a challenge.
The sheets are the foundation of a bed, paving the way to enriched sleep and an enhanced overall look.
Most sets of king bed sheets come with a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and at least two pillowcases that are designed for king-size pillows. But the fact that it's king-size doesn't guarantee it will fit your mattress perfectly. That is because king-size mattresses can have different dimensions, meaning a standard sheet set may not always be the right match.
Invest in Quality Sheets
Standard king beds don't measure the same as California king beds, and mattress depth also varies. Some mattresses are as thin as 20 centimetres, while others, especially pillow-top or memory foam models, can be 38 centimetres or more. If the fitted sheet isn't deep enough, it may pop off the corners, and if it's too loose, it can bunch up uncomfortably. So, to enjoy a snug, comfortable sleep, make sure the sheet size aligns with your mattress size.
The quality of the sheet is mostly determined by the material it's made from and the thread count. Both of these factors influence the softness, breathability and overall feel of the sheets.
Cotton is one of the most popular fabric choices, with options like Egyptian cotton and Pima cotton known for their superior softness and long-lasting durability. Linen king bed sheets are another common option. Made from flax fibres, linen offers excellent breathability and a relaxed, lived-in texture that improves with each wash. Bamboo and Tencel are also great options. They provide a silky-smooth feel with moisture-wicking properties, making them ideal for hot sleepers.
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. Generally, a higher thread count results in a softer and more durable sheet, but only to a certain point. For example, a thread count between 300 and 600 in high-quality cotton sheets is often ideal, offering a good balance of softness and breathability.
However, extremely high thread counts (above 800) can sometimes be misleading, as they may use multi-ply threads that don't necessarily enhance quality. That said, instead of focusing on numbers only, consider both thread count and material to find sheets that provide the best comfort and longevity.
Use Lots of Pillows
Pillows have the power to elevate a bed's look, adding layers of cosy comfort and visual interest. But they must be styled right to achieve a balanced look.
Start by placing a pair of king-size pillows at the back of the bed. These pillows will provide the foundation layer and will give your bed a substantial, full appearance. Next, add a set of standard-size pillows in front of your king-size pillows. These smaller pillows will create depth and dimension. For a more dramatic look, you can consider using Euro pillows placed in a row, lying flat against the larger pillows.
To finish the look, use decorative pillows in different sizes and textures. For example, you can use two or three lumbar pillows or accent pillows in the centre of the bed in different materials like velvet, silk and linen. Intricate patterns, embroidery or tassels can be a great way to add texture and interest to your bed look.
Throws and blankets add warmth and softness to the bed scheme, making it feel more inviting and cosy, especially during colder months. Beyond practicality, they serve as decorative accents, introducing texture, colour, and layers to your bedding.
Combining blankets and throws when styling a bed is all about layering textures, colours, and patterns for a cosy, well-curated look. Start with a neatly spread duvet or quilt as your base, then layer a blanket across the foot of the bed for extra warmth and dimension. Choose a material that complements the bedding, such as a lightweight linen blanket for a breezy feel or a plush fleece for added cosiness.
Add Throws and Blankets
Next, drape or fold a throw on top of the blanket for contrast in texture and colour. You can casually toss the throw for a relaxed, effortless vibe or neatly fold it for a more polished appearance. Mixing materials, like a chunky knit throw with a smooth cotton or velvet blanket, adds depth and interest. Stick to a cohesive colour palette, but don't be afraid to introduce subtle patterns or accent colours to create a stylish and inviting bed.
Play With Colours and Patterns
If you like the idea of a perfectly coordinated bed scheme, fine, but it doesn't necessarily have to be this way. If you're after a more personal and unique look, feel free to mix and match patterns. This idea also offers you an affordable way to change the look of your bedding without having to replace everything at once.
Start by choosing a base colour for your duvet or quilt. Neutral tones like white, beige, or grey offer versatility, while bolder hues can make a statement. Then opt for complementary or contrasting colours for blankets, throws, and pillows to add depth and interest.
When mixing patterns, balance is key. For a more cohesive look, combine large-scale prints with smaller, subtle designs. Stripes, florals, geometric shapes, and textured fabrics can all work together if they share a common colour palette. If you prefer a more understated look, stick to tonal variations of the same colour family. Adding pops of colour through accent pillows or a boldly patterned throw can bring energy to the space while still feeling harmonious.
