There is nowhere like the Lake District at any time of the year but it is stunning in the winter. Whilst tourist figures would indicate that summer and spring are the most popular times to visit the region, few could argue against the true magic of the Lake District found in winter. The snow-capped mountain peaks and serene lakes make the Lake District a fantastic winter getaway destination.
Nothing can really compare to the buzz of exploring the many quaint towns and villages of the area, sitting in front of a roaring fire in one of the many country inns or gazing over the incredible landscape. There is certainly enough to keep you occupied for a good few days, and more importantly, plenty of beautiful places to stay.
Let's look at some unmissable winter activities you might want to consider for your winter trip to the Lake District.

Take a crisp winter's walk
This one seems obvious, given the Lake District's association with walking. However, we are not discussing doing any of the Wainwrights here – this could be a little bit dangerous in the winter months. On the other hand, a crisp, frosty, short winter walk will suffice. The crunch of frost under your boots, the crack of ice as you step on a frozen puddle, and the curl of your breath as it meets the cold air, combined with the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District, make even the shortest stroll genuinely unmissable.
Sitting by a log fire
This cosy activity can sometimes be something of a necessity after our first suggestion. There is something incredibly comforting about sitting in front of a log fire in a charming inn. Pairing this with a hot drink (or something stronger) after a bracing walk is always a welcome combination.
Whether you spend time by a log fire eating a well-prepared meal, sipping your favourite beer or reading a book, you’re going to tap into a uniquely warming experience, inside and out.
Take a whisky tour
Cockermouth is home to The Lakes Distillery, which offers regular tours and tastings. This is a great activity for the colder months and a great opportunity to sort out some of those difficult-to-buy-for-present-giving problems that often arise in the winter season. Why not book a tour and tasting for you and your partner as an early Christmas gift? Or, if you have a family member who loves whiskey, you could take the tour and then buy them a special gift in the on-site shop.
Watch the sunrise
The clear winter skies make it the perfect time to watch the sunrise or sunset. So wrap up warm, grab a flask, and head somewhere with a great view of the scenery and the sunrise or sunset. This is one activity you won’t regret planning; just don’t forget your camera!
Take a boat or steam engine trip
Why not explore the Lake District from another angle? Take a boat trip on one of the lakes and get a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. Be warned, this can be a very chilly activity, so do remember to wrap up warm. If steam trains are more your thing, then there are several in the Lake District, so why not get yourself a ticket and enjoy the incredible views as you slowly chug up the hillside?
Plenty of gentle strolls can be combined with any of these activities and are a great way to keep the cold away.
Whatever you decide to do in the Lake District in the winter, remember to wrap up warmly and always charge your mobile before you go out.
