Why Getting a Good Night's Sleep is So Important

    Colab post

If you are finding it hard to sleep at night, then you are not alone. So many people are in the same situation as you are, but if you do not take the time to focus on the reason why you can’t sleep then you could be missing out on valuable health benefits. If you want to find out more then simply look below.

    Helping you to Lose Weight

Studies have been done time and time again on sleep, and they have concluded that if you do not get 7 hours of sleep or more a night, you have a greater risk of weight gain and a higher BMI. Studies have found that those who sleep for less than 7 hours a night, had a 41% increased risk of becoming obese. If you are sleep-deprived then this can increase your ghrelin levels, and it can also decrease leptin as well. Ghrelin is essentially the hormone that makes you feel hungry, and leptin is the hormone that makes you feel full. If these hormones are out of balance, then you may feel hungrier and overeat as a result. To make things even worse, feeling tired after not getting enough sleep can leave you feeling unmotivated when it comes to hitting the gym, or even going on a walk. For this reason, if you want to start taking better care of your health, you need to sleep better at night so you can avoid all of these negative side effects.

    Boosting Concentration

Did you know that getting enough sleep is vital for your concentration levels? It is also imperative for your brain function too. Studies have been done on overworked physicians, and they have found that doctors who didn’t get enough sleep were 97% more likely to have a medical error. If you can make sure that you get enough sleep, then this can improve your ability to solve problems, while also enhancing your brain function. This is the case in both children and adults, so it is important to keep this in mind.

    Working out Better

Did you know that sleep can also enhance your athletic performance? Studies have been done and they have found that if you get enough sleep then this can enhance your fine motor skills as well as your reactive time. It can help you with your muscle power and your muscular endurance. If you do not get enough sleep then you may lose your motivation to exercise and you may also find that you increase your risk of injury as a result, so it is not hard to see how all of this can work against you.

    Helping your Heart

Low sleep quality or low sleep duration can increase your chance of developing heart disease. Some studies have been done, and they have found that those who slept for less than 7 hours every day had a 13% higher chance of developing heart disease. What’s more, is that if you only sleep in short bursts then you may find that you increase your chance of developing high blood pressure. If you have sleep apnea, then this is especially the case. Sleep apnea is a condition that interrupts your breathing when you sleep.  If you want to do something about this, then you have to uncover the reason why you can’t sleep at night and you also need to take steps to focus on your sleep quality. If you are not sleeping well because of your bed then visiting some bed shops could be the best idea, as this will help you to find the right mattress for you. It may be that you need a firmer mattress, or that you need a whole new bed because the one you have now has missing slats or is broken in places. Little things like this can influence your sleep, so you must take them into account.

    Sugar Metabolism

Short sleep has been associated time and time again with insulin resistance. This is when your body is unable to use the hormone properly. Studies have found that those who do not sleep enough end up being at a way higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and that this can have a lifelong impact. If you want to do something about this, then make sure that you are sleeping well and that you are not ignoring the signs of diabetes potentially developing. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier for you to make the right changes.
