10 Things to Deep Clean This Winter

    Dec 6, 2024 by Ali · Leave a Comment

Even if you clean every week, many of your household objects will still have smudges and various forms of residue on them. This is because most people clean their homes just for appearance. They rarely perform deep cleaning that will take care of nasty stains or hard-to-notice dust.

In this article, we want to take a look at all these different objects and areas that you might’ve overlooked. Here are some of the best deep cleaning tips that will help you this winter.

A person equipped for a deep clean holds a blue bucket brimming with cleaning supplies, including spray bottles and cloths, all while donning orange gloves. It's a perfect winter task to freshen up your space and tackle those overlooked things to clean.

    1. Pans and Pots

Pans and pots are the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about deep cleaning. Pour hot water into your pan and add some dish soap. Keep in mind that the cleaning solution shouldn't have to be that strong, as you'll eat food from that pot.

    2. Toaster

Toasters are one of the trickier kitchen appliances to clean. It's vital that you don't spray water inside the toaster slots as it might damage the heating elements. Use any type of brush to scrub stubborn food residue, such as cheese and bread, from these elements. Pull out the crumb tray and thoroughly clean it (don't insert it back until it's dry).

    3. Aerator

Every once in a while, remove the aerator from your faucet and place it in a glass or jar filled with vinegar . The liquid will dislodge accumulated caulk from the aerator, allowing better water flow. You might also consider replacing your aerator every few years (here's where you can find some of the best products on the market: https://aerator.com/)

    4. Microwave

You can use a popular lemon hack to clean the interior of your microwave. Put a few slices of lemon into a microwave-proof bowl. Squeeze juice into the same bowl, close the door, and let the liquid boil until the window steams up. Leave the lemon water inside the microwave for five minutes. After that, just open the door and clean the microwave walls with a dry sponge.

    5. Wood Cabinets

Wood cabinets, especially those in our kitchens, are sprayed with cooking grease and food residues. Create a half-half mixture of water and vinegar and put it in a spray bottle. Add some dish soap for a better smell and stubborn grime. Spray the mixtures all over your cabinets, let the mixture sit for a few minutes, and remove it with a dry cloth.

    6. Washing Machine

Similar to many other appliances, the washing machine is a victim of caulk. Every once in a while, you should run your washing machine without any clothes to remove soap residue and other substances. Spray the drum with vinegar and water solution beforehand. You should occasionally remove the filter from the bottom of the washing machine and clean it.

    7. Mattress

Mattresses have an enormous impact on our health and wellbeing. You should make a habit of vacuuming the mattress every few months. If you notice any stains, you can remove them by dabbing vinegar solution or a stain remover.

Take a handful of baking soda, place it in a jar, and add a few drops of essential oil. Spread the mixture across the mattress to absorb smells and vacuum the baking soda afterward.

    8. Pillow

Similar to mattresses, pillows need some love. The good news is that you can wash them in the washing machine. Read the label beforehand and use one of the weaker cleaning options. Furthermore, you should go with cold water as it prevents feathers from clumping. Make sure to dry pillows on the lowest heat setting to protect the filling.

    9. Grill

Fire the grill with a closed hood. Let it burn for 30 minutes, thus removing any sticky debris from the grates and other parts. When that's over, pour soapy water on a brush and go over the grates to remove carbon. For an even deeper cleaning, we suggest you remove the grates and dip them into buckets with dishwasher soap and water.

    10. Air Conditioner

If you notice a funky smell or dirt on your AC, it means that it's high time that you clean it. Most ACs have two sets of coils located in the front and the back of the appliance. Use a soft brush to clean these coils. You can even use soap detergent but in small quantities.

Once you’re done with the coils, clean the filters. Clean them with a damp cloth and rinse them with some soapy water. When the filter is dry, put it back in.

    Conclusion

These cleaning habits will keep your home cleaner but also prolong the life expectancy of various appliances. We suggest you create a schedule and stick to it. Another good trick is separating regular cleaning from deep cleaning. That way, you can fully dedicate yourself to certain appliances that aren’t getting enough love.
