It is very easy for families to get caught up in daily routines and neglect to make time for each other. The average family spends 4 hours of quality time each week. If you are looking for more rewarding family life, it's time to get creative with how you all spend time together. With the summer months fast approaching, here are some fun outdoor activities that you and your family can get into.
Cycling
Cycling is a great way to stay in shape and release some stress. When done in a group, cycling can be a fantastic outdoor activity. Cycling makes it possible for you and your family to spend quality time. It is also extremely healthy for you and your family, improving your physical and mental well-being. An hour of cycling can burn around 600 calories and keep your metabolism up for many hours. The good thing about cycling with your family is that you wouldn't even notice you are working out, which is good for those exercise-averse members-spending time talking and admiring the scenery. At the same time, riding is also an excellent mood booster. There are several ways to make cycling fun with your family, so keep this in mind. You can map out different biking routes or even try tandem biking with your spouse.
Cooking
If you have an outdoor kitchen, you can use it by initiating family cooking days, where you all gather and spend time whipping up delicious recipes. First, cooking is a great platform for family bonding because it encourages all family members to work together. It also helps your kids brush up on their skills. Not only would they learn how to cook, but they would also learn new words from recipes and firm up their math skills as they learn how to measure ingredients. They can also learn many scientific things, so keep this in mind. They will also learn soft skills such as working as a group and cleaning up after themselves. Setting time aside from your busy schedules can allow you to catch up with each other and connect.
Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts are therapeutic activities that help you and your entire family relax after a stressful period. Research shows that children actively engaged in exploring their artistic sides develop their imagination and enhance their creativity. Setting up a family arts and crafts day at home also increases your bond as a family and gets you to spend a little extra quality time with your kids. Plus, you can all relish the sense of accomplishment of completing a craft project together. However, arts and crafts can come with lots of mess. Fortunately, taking your family's arts and crafts time outside is a smart way to deal with less clean-up.
Hiking
If you're a family that appreciates the great outdoors, why not get your family to spend time hiking? Sometimes, it's good to take a break from inside activities and your electronics and take a deep breath of fresh air. Hiking will allow you to be aware of your immediate surroundings and encourage you to speak to each other. Whether it's a long short trail, you can create beautiful memories with your loved ones. For instance, it can be fun to remember that majestic-looking tree or cute animal scurrying away.
Hiking also encourages active learning for both children and parents. Instead of always reading about wildlife, you can learn about it by seeing it in action. You can make short notes on what you can expect to see on certain trails. Or you can make it more fun for the family by giving everyone a hiking log where they can track every new thing they've discovered.
DIY Activities
Getting your kids involved in DIY projects might seem a little scary to think of, especially if they are too young. But if they are much older, including them in some home renovation projects and activities will be an excellent way to develop skills that they can use later in life.
With the summer holidays right around the corner, this is the perfect time to set up a DIY spot in your backyard, where you and your kids can work on several projects while they are home. For instance, you can build a bookcase and let them paint it to match their bedrooms, or you can construct a treehouse. Depending on your budget, your treehouse can be basic, or you can go all out with intricate designs. However, it should be something that all your kids will enjoy playing in for years.
You can also build an outdoor space where you and your family can relax and spend quality bonding time. Outdoor spaces like decks can extend your indoor living quarters, and you can decorate them with cosy sofas and other furniture to make you feel more comfortable. Plus, you can get your entire family involved when building a deck if you choose to do it yourself. As a tip, ensure that you have all the required decking materials and tools to make your project more enjoyable.
Beach Day
The beach is a great place to be with your family as the weather heats up, so keep this in mind. Taking your children to the beach is not only fun, but it has proven to be very healthy and advantageous in several ways. One important benefit of bringing your kids to the beach is that the ocean is known to have calming effects. That said, it's effective for lowering stress. Plus, spending time in the sunlight is great for your children's bones and lowers blood pressure. Furthermore, who wouldn't want to spend the day swimming in the ocean and building sandcastles in the sun?
Hopefully, these family outdoor activities have inspired you to get your family away from the screens and spend time outside. You can check out more family quality time activities you can get into as well, so keep this in mind.
