Common Causes of Slip and Fall Accidents

    Sep 17, 2026 by Ali · Leave a Comment

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded 1,034 workplace fatalities that occurred in the private construction industry in 2024. Falls to a lower level accounted for 96% of these deaths. Accidents involving falls, slips, and trips accounted for the most deaths in the industry, totaling 389. Construction also accounted for 48.8% of all fatal falls, slips, and trips in private industry that year.

Falls are more serious than people think. In 2024, the National Safety Council reported that falls resulted in over 48,000 deaths at home and work. These cases account for about a quarter of all preventable injury-related deaths in the U.S. A slip and fall can take place in a store aisle, a work hall, or even out on the street.

There are several reasons why and how such accidents persist. Let's take a closer look at these incidents so you can be aware and prevent yourself from becoming a victim.

A woman in a black dress sits on a staircase, leaning back against the wall with one arm outstretched and looking upwards.

    Wet or Recently Cleaned Floors

A floor that is wet or coated with wax can cause a fall. A floor with such a hazard can be tricky for people. It may look safe at first, so a person may not notice the danger.

Spilling a drink on the floor is a potential slip hazard. A surface that was just mopped can also lead to falls. Rain and snow water brought in on shoes makes the area slick and exposes people to the risk of slipping and falling. Once grip is reduced, a slip may happen without warning. People who encounter these situations often have little time to steady themselves or step away.

    Uneven or Damaged Walking Surfaces

When walking, people can trip on cracked pavement and potholes. Some spots also sink or move after weather and traffic. Most folks spot the problem only after a misstep. A shoe may catch on a raised edge. Or a foot may land in a dip. That small stumble can turn into a fall right away.

Slipping Versus Tripping Are Mechanically Different

Falls do not all work the same way, and the details matter. A trip and fall takes place when something blocks a person's step. A loose rug, a power cord, or a left-behind item in a walkway can cause it. The person often lunges forward. This sudden movement can lead to serious injuries.

Some people end up hurting their hands, wrists, or knees while trying to catch themselves. A slip is different. It happens when a foot cannot grip the ground at all. This type of fall more often pushes a person backward or to the side. Injuries then show up more often in the back, hip, or head.

    Poor Lighting

Insufficient lighting is another common cause of slip and fall. Lighting allows people to see where they are walking and reduces the chances of slipping on a potential hazard. Walking in stairways, hallways, and parking lots with poor light makes people particularly susceptible to injury.

    Weather-Related Hazards

Ice, snow, and rain add a different kind of risk. The risk is worse on surfaces that do not drain water fast. What a property owner must do for these issues often depends on timing. It also depends on how bad the weather was. In most cases, the owner is expected to resolve problems within a fair amount of time. They are not always required to respond the exact minute the weather hits.

Failure to Maintain or Warn About Known Hazards

Many slip and fall incidents do not start with one sudden surprise. They often come from something the property owner already knew about but did not fix. A San Bernardino slip and fall accident lawyer will usually see the same theme in these cases. A spill sits there too long. A sidewalk issue is noticed, then ignored. Lighting is poor, yet no one repairs it. In general, owners must keep a reasonable watch on their property. They also have to handle known dangers or clearly warn others. When they don't, a simple hazard can turn into a legal dispute.

    Clutter and Obstructed Walkways

Loose items in aisles, stairs, or walkways can be a real problem. This type of problem can include boxes, tools, products, or even personal items left behind. These things can trip someone quickly. These items are more often found in stores and warehouses. People move through those areas all day. Stock gets moved around too. If clutter is not checked often, the risk stays there.

Why Identifying the Cause Actually Matters

A fall investigation is not only about clarifying what caused the accident. It shapes what details are treated as important. It also affects how long people think the risky condition may have been there. The result of the investigation changes how the owner's actions are judged under the law. If the danger lasted for weeks, the legal outcome can look very different than if it started only minutes before.
