How Every Home Owner Can Fall Back In Love with Their House

    Apr 17, 2024 by Ali · Leave a Comment

    Colab post

Home is where the heart is, or so the saying goes. While sure, there is no place like home, sometimes it can feel stale. Even when you're working on maintaining your home, maybe even that just feels so dreadful, right?  If you find yourself scrolling online, you might go "ooh" and "ah" at some of the gorgeous homes, right? Just look at House Beautiful; those houses are just so dreamy! Whether you've been feeling uninspired by your decor or just craving a change of scenery, there's no better time than now to reignite that spark and fall back in love with your home.

Chances are, at one point in time, you really loved your home. Sometimes, things just feel boring, and they just need to be fixed-basically, getting that spark back into it. So, with that all said, here are some simple yet effective ways to breathe new life into your living space and rediscover the magic of home sweet home.

Understanding Why We Grow Tired of Our Living Spaces

You need to remember that your home is meant to be your sanctuary, the place where you can seek solace and comfort after a long day. But what happens when that once-beloved haven starts to lose its luster? Why do we sometimes find ourselves growing tired of our homes and falling out of love with them? You need to remember that this isn't just you; literally, everyone feels this way at one point in time! But why exactly? Is it just something that happens over time? Is it inevitable?

    There's the Familiarity Trap

They say familiarity breeds contempt, and nowhere is this more apparent than in our own living spaces. Over time, we become accustomed to the sights, sounds, and smells of our homes, and what once felt cosy and comforting can start to feel mundane and uninspiring. It's easy to take our surroundings for granted when we see them day in and day out, leading to a gradual erosion of our initial affection for our homes. Again, this isn't just you- this is everyone!

    Changing Needs and Lifestyles

Everyone evolves and grows, and so do everyone's needs and lifestyles. What worked for you in the past may no longer serve you in the present. Perhaps you've outgrown your starter home and need more space for a growing family. Or maybe you've transitioned to remote work and require a dedicated home office space. When homes fail to adapt to these changing circumstances, it's only natural that your affection for them begins to wane.

    Design Stagnation

Just as fashion trends come and go, so too do design trends. What was once considered stylish and on-trend may now feel outdated and passé. Just take a look at some interior design trends from five, ten, and twenty years ago-chances are, what you liked back then is nowhere near what you like now. When homes fail to keep pace with the ever-changing world of design, they can start to feel stagnant and stale.

Without periodic updates and refreshes, even the most well-loved spaces can lose their appeal over time. Yep, trends actually do make an impact! But of course, if you're adamant about following trends, then this will 100% affect your mentality, not only about your space but also about what you own and even what you wear.

    External Influencers

Sometimes, factors beyond your control can impact how you feel about your home. For example, maybe you have horrible neighbours, there's a construction project going on down the street, or even some changes surrounding the place. Just generally speaking, external influences can disrupt how you feel about your home because that peace and harmony you're expecting is just no longer there.

How Can You Rediscover the Magic of Your Home?

How can you rediscover the magic? Is it easy? At the end of the day, home is what we make it - a reflection of our personalities, preferences, and priorities. So you just need to approach your mind with change. In fact, everyone makes changes to their home at one point or another, whether it be transforming a bedroom into a lovely walk in wardrobe or even tearing down the walls for an open plan. There's magic in your home, and sometimes, making changes can help you rediscover it.

    Curate Moments, Not Things

At the end of the day, it's not about how many things you have but the memories and moments they represent. So why not just take the time to curate your space with meaningful objects and mementos that bring you joy and evoke positive emotions? It can be something like displaying family photos, showcasing souvenirs from your travels, creating a gallery wall of artwork, or surrounding yourself with reminders of what matters most, which can help you fall back in love with your home all over again.

So, if you see influencers showing off stuff they got from hauls, don't just think, "I need this," because it's just stuff. It might not even be something you want the second it gets in your hands.

    Consider Bringing the Outdoors Inside

There's something inherently calming about being surrounded by nature, don't you think? So, like what was talked about above, some people fall out of love with their house because their home just isn't tranquil- like how a home is supposed to be. So why not channel those tranquil vibes by incorporating elements of the outdoors into your home decor? From potted plants and fresh flowers to natural materials like wood and stone, embracing biophilic design can help blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living and create a sense of harmony with the natural world.

    Switch Up Your Lighting

Do you use overhead lighting in your home? Do you have the dreaded boob light on your ceiling? Well, it's the lighting itself that also impacts the ambiance in your home.So it might help if you experiment with different lighting fixtures, layering overhead lighting with table lamps, floor lamps, and candles to achieve the perfect balance of brightness and warmth. And don't forget about the power of natural light - opening curtains and blinds during the day can flood your space with sunshine and uplift your mood in an instant.
