It is likely that you have a long list of things to consider when you are moving into a new home. Whether this is your first home, or you are just moving to a new location, it can be a challenging time, and the last thing you want is to run into problems later down the line. While you already have packing and unpacking, transporting the family and much more to think about, one important step that you should prioritise is how you can best, and quickly, settle into the property. There is no better time when you move into a home, to get familiar with the home and make any necessary changes, instead of waiting too long, putting it off, and leaving it to a later date.
To make it easier for you, here is a list of the most important things to do when you first move into a new house.
#1 Conduct a walkthrough
The best walkthrough you can do in your new home is when it is completely empty. Likely, you haven’t seen it like this before, and probably won’t ever again after you have moved your stuff in. Before you fill your home with boxes and furniture, take a look around the property. Keep an eye out for any cracks, dampness, mould, or general problems with the property. You should also make sure that everything meets the conditions that it was in before buying or renting, and any repairs that have been agreed, have been done. Make sure everything is in working order.
You can then make a list of items that you need to prioritise or projects you should work on, and be able to quickly notify your estate agent of any issues that breach the contract. If you don’t do this as soon as possible, it may cause bigger, costly problems later down the line.
#2 Clean the property
It can be difficult to clean your home after all your items are inside. You should therefore give your home a deep clean and prepare it before you unpack. Depending on how much cleaning is required, you may need professional support, such as carpet cleaning services. This is especially important if the previous owners or tenants had pets. You want to feel good when you move in, and cleaning will make your home a healthy environment for your family, by getting rid of dust, dirt, germs and junk. It will make it feel fresh and clean, and therefore, much nicer to live in, and ready for all your belongings.
#3 Change the locks
It is a good practice to change the locks of a new property. There may not be any concerns with the previous owners, but you never know the full history of the home or the people that have lived there, or who owns a key. The current lock systems could also be very outdated and unsecured. Changing the locks is a great way to have peace of mind, and keep your family safe. You can get a locksmith to come by before you move your belongings into the property.
Moving into a new property is an exciting new endeavour. Make sure you prioritise these tasks to make the experience pleasant, and your new home enjoyable.
